Leather strip grip ??
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:59:00 AM »
I want to have a t/d longbow riser receive a new leather grip. But I want the grip to be wrapped with 1/2" leather. Here is a pic of my 1960 Shakespear recurve with one. You can see kind of where the strip begins and ends and but you cant see the strip ends themselves.

I have a tennis wrap on my t/d riser currently but it wears pretty fast so I want real leather.

Does anybody know who can do this???

I believe there is a build along in the How To section.

Shaun Webb did a grip build along, like you are asking about, in a back issue of Trad Archer's World magazine.  I am at work, so I can't tell you what issue.  I bet if you contacted them they could tell you and you could order it.

Horseapple (JD Jones) is a master of the leather wrap too.

Maybe he will see this. I used to have a How To by JD but can't find it now. He helped me out at OJam on a yew bow.

Here is one of JD's bows:

You an do it yourself.  All you really need to do is dab a little contact cement on the last half inch or so of each end, wrap to suit you and tuck the ends under.  I like to put the tucked ends to the right.  More out of the way for a rightie.

The stuff I use is pretty thin and it's a split so it has a sueded finish.  2-3 oz is plenty heavy.  JD does some fantastic work with heavier weight leather, but it's quite bit bit more work since you have to skive the edges of the leather down.
