New Ground
« on: February 07, 2012, 09:29:00 PM »
Went to check out a new WMA the other day. Its 7,000+ acres on the Altamaha River about half way between Marty Thompson "Apex Predator" and My hunting grounds....I recon we`ll have to share this one.lol.
  On the way in...

Promising name for sure. Never have set foot on the place and was more interested in covering ground than hunting so I grabbed a map out of the box and took off. I was on one logging road for near ten miles. I made a bearing through a fairly big swamp and saw scattered old pig sign but nothing smoking. Beautiful place for sure...

The green stuff in the last pic was small water oak trees. Continued on through the swamp to a beautiful oxbow I don`t know the name of...

Then on to the River. Its a lot darker water here than at home. The tide effects this far down and the creeks running in are all black water creeks...

Looks like a cool place RC! I am sure we will be seeing some pictures of you and some deceased critters coming out of that place soon!!!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Found some sign of other hunters...

And a fine low swamp that was good looking for pork and had a good bit of pig sign in it. since I tore my calf a couple years ago I can`t take the calf deep mud bogging so I declined the temptation of going in even though I saw a pig cross the road headed in.

One heck of a swamp persimmon tree...

started down this dead in walking road and spotted two does. They had no idea I was there when I first saw them.

  Now something cool...
Hunting deer the way I do mostly consist of covering a bunch of ground till I find something hot and sitting on it. A feed tree is HOT. This is what it looks like under a feed tree in a Southern Swamp. This sign is near three months old. A place I`ll keep in mind for sure next year.

Not just a handfull but a treefull of crunched up acorns.

Notice the bare dirt under this tree. Hogs and deer both. If a fella had sat here when it was hot he would have got a shot or many shots if he stayed with it.RC

Those suckers are out already???  After this week I am ready to scout.  Guess I'll be changing into my snake boots early.

Looks like a good looking place for being so small of a place.  Good luck next year RC!

Great pics, as usual, RC.  If I know you, you'll help them control the hog population there.
