Darren,

Are you thinking the group that comes down Friday should meet up prior, at some location and do a meet and greet before heading into the WMA?

Tradlongbow, can I get on the list?  I can't miss actually spending time with so many of my TG Hill shooting brethren and sisters.  This event would be worthwhile if a pig were never sighted!    :archer2:

I've talked about having a meet and great already with a couple of the guys. As the hunt gets closer we can decide if it's going to be Thursday or Friday night. We can setup a community area where we have a fire pit so we can just bring a chair and meet every night.

I think a "meet and great" on Thursday evening followed by a similar one on Friday evening for all the new arrivals, could be the best of both worlds. With a community area and a fire pit, I wouldn't miss an opportunity to share this level of company every night I am there!

By way of pre-hunt preparation, I elected to have arthroscopic surgery on BOTH of my crunchy, old knees two days ago, rather than stringing it out, one bum knee at a time. For this hunt, it is my hopeful intention to recover my capability to move VERY quickly--either towards or away from an offended hog--as "circumstances" require! (This capability has served me in good stead, in the past.)

I can't wait!!!

Owlmagnet, listen to Drs., it's the best chance at a full recovery.  Don't push it early.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for your well-wishes and advice. At the moment, my greatest challenge lies in trying to figure out how to limp on both legs at the same time! The VA, confident in my complete and rapid recovery, felt I did not require a walker, crutches, or a cane, following the bilateral surgery. I take that as an encouraging sign....

I'll be happy when I can resume regular practice with my Wesley Special. I am not quite up to walking back and forth from the target butt, but I feel I am getting closer by the hour. Any thoughts of resuming my study of Taekwondo will wait until after my post-op evaluation on 12 July.

This "getting old stuff" is NOT for the faint of heart!

With the numbers we're going to have, what do you guys think about taking advantage of that and doing some drives?  It could be very effective.

There's a lot of guys that are already planning to carpool. I suggest checking the list of names of everyone going, maybe some lives near you.

I know there's a couple of guys coming from MI area.

I think he means "drive" the bushes to move game towards others.

Drives have been very effective in my deer hunting past. How does it work on hogs?

Correct Bud, that's what I meant.  I would assume it would work the same with hogs.  A long line of archers sets up downwind of an area known or suspected to hold game.  They are safe distances apart from each other, usually behind a tree or some cover, facing downwind, and expecting game to pass them from behind.  Each archer would know they could only shoot forward or out to 45 degrees left or right only.  They wouldn't be able to shoot at game directly left or right of them, or behind them, for safety reasons.  Meanwhile, while the archers are setting up, the drivers circle way around and spread out in a line upwind of the critters and slowly start making their way in the direction of the archers.  The drivers don't make lots of racket, they casually stroll.  Hopefully the game hears them coming and/or winds them and starts in the opposite direction, but you don't want them busting out of the area on high alert or at high speeds.  You just want them moving.  If the waiting archers are alert and ready, they could have multiple opportunities.  Then you move to another spot and let the drivers become the archers and vice versa.

I haven't thought about driven game since I lived in Louisiana some 25 years ago. Where I hunt in Florida the terrain is thick with bushes/brush, it would almost be immpossaible to drive the game in this type of terrian the way we did it home. The best person to ask about driving the game would be RC, because he knows the terrian. I'll give RC a pm, see if he can chime in.

Hawken 1911: As I suggested in an earlier post, an organized hunt in that fashion, longbowmen all, might be the biggest one since the middle ages....  I made a hunting horn and I'm trying to learn how to blow the darned thing, just in case the idea takes root.

I personally look forward to meeting you. I have been following the exploits of you and your companions for some time. I am the Captain of Archers of a small Barony in the SCA. Recently, several of my traditional archers have expressed an interest in a "period hunt", (for small game, to begin with), and I consider your organization to be a role model.

Darren,
I would also like to be added to the list. I have been following this discussion since it was on the Howard Hill thread. I just wanted to wait until it was a little closer time wise.

Hi Bob,

I look forward to meeting you in person at the Howard Hill hunt as well.  Keep practicing with that horn...I'll bring mine along.  I've been on a group hunt where we communicated with hunting horns.  They were very effective, and it is amazing how far the sound will carry.

That's excellent about your interest in medieval-style hunting!  If you and your friends put together period hunter kits, please consider sending photos to the Rangers and joining our brotherhood.  We've got a great group of guys and gals who would love to hear about any medieval hunts you do.

Take care,

Paul

Paul, thank you for the response. My archers are used to operating in medieval "garb", but very few of us carry self bows. My Wesley Special has a shelf, (which saves a lot of fair wear and tear on my finger when I'm shooting self nocked, thread wrapped arrows), and most of my archers are carrying fairly modern, shelved, recurves.

That said, I'll probably be carrying an Archer's Axe and a ridiculously large knife, in addition to my hunting horn, on this hog hunt. You just never know when period gear can come in handy...

We're up to 80 confirmed Hill Ganger's

This hunt is a Hill style bow only hunt.

Several months ago the guys that contribute to the Hill thread had an idea to hunt together. Within the last week, plans we’re made to hog hunt Southern Georgia because it offered many opportunities for wild hog and easy access flying into Atlanta.

As the date gets closer, we will need to plan the logistics.

The hog hunt will take place on a WMA, 2/22, 2/23, 2/24 of 2013.

Camping will be primitive.
Several members in Georgia have offered to bring camping and cooking equipment.
Food bill can be divided amongst everyone.
Archery equipment can be shipped ahead of time to a member in Ga. or Fl.
If you’re flying in to Atlanta try to carpool with another member.
If you’re driving south try to carpool with another member.
We should have enough tents and sleeping bags to accommodate everyone that’s flying in.
Guys that are driving, bring a target with you, so we can practice and do any fine tuning.
WMA license $73.00
3 Day hunting license $20.00

If we have an idea on which WMAs we might hunt could someone make that call? I read back thru the first several pages and didn't see any named specificaly. But I scan read sometimes and miss things. Reason is, I would like to purchase some topo maps. Maybe the three or four possibilities? Buying an extra map or two wouldn't be a bad thing.

Also, are there any restrictions on tag-along campers? Or is it primitive tenting only?
