Got a Couple of Bears to Play With! (Updated Again!)
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:18:00 PM »
Mr. Postman brought me a couple of great Bears today. 1st, is a 1969 Bear Tigercat. 62", 48# @ 28". Just a beauty of a bow and has been dubbed "Red Sonja". 2nd, is a 1978 Bear Black Bear. 60", 45# @ 28". There's not a scratch or anything on this baby! No string but, she looks pretty straight and clean. Beautiful dark greenish grey glass on back and belly.

Great catch, T.W.  The Tigercat is a very underrated bow, IMO.  Think of it as a long Grizzly.  Great shooters and a nice feel to them.  Mine is a '67.

Rick, the Tigercat has an excellent grip to it. It fits my hand very well and is a joy to hold. Gonna take her shooting tomorrow!

Nice bows TW!   This has gotta be your year brother!   I figure one of those blacktails will be Bear bitten this year...

Anyone have an idea what the brace height on the Black Bear would be? Also, what string length do I need for it? Thanks in advance.

I love them old Bear bows, I've got 2 of them myself and I've always shot them well. I have a late 60's early 70's model Grizzly that belonged to my uncle and a 76' model Kodiak Magnum. I really, really love my Kodiak Magnum it's a screamer and such a nice short length for blind hunting. That KM will be my turkey blind bow come this spring in just a short couple months.

Looks like you have a real nice pair of archery history there. Enjoy the benefits of hunting with a couple of legends and still one of the best recurves ever made.

Nice bows TW!  My Black Bear uses a 56" actual string length for a AMO 60" bow, and once shot in stretches about a half inch and gives a brace height of 6 3/8" and 58" tip to tip when strung.  The 1972 Bear catalog lists 58" tip to tip rather than brace height on that bow and the catalog picture shows the low brace height as well.

Hope this helps!

I've got a Black Bear just like that in 40#.  The best shooting bow I have. Wished it was a least #45 though. Great Bows!

So, been playing around with the Tigercat most of the day. Did not like the feather rest so, I put a Hoyt Pro rest on the bow and my arrows started flying true. Shooting with a tab I got this after some practice shots. Approx. 15yds.

With Bowhush now on the string, this bow is almost ready for hunting season. Yes, she will be taking the place of the Browning.   :D  Cannot believe how well this bow performs for me!

TW,
Glad you are getting along with the Tigercat but with the Hoyt rest keep a spare with you while hunting. If that plastic finger breaks due to wear you will find having backup a good thing-learned from experience on a big 6x6 in NM.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Thank you again Tom and you are correct on the backup rest. I've got 4 to go along with me in my day pack.   :D
