Setup
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:07:00 PM »
I am just getting into shooting a recurve. As of now I am shooting a 45 lb Bear Grizzly. I believe my DL is 28 inches but I am thinking now it is maybe more like 27". I am currently shooting CE heritage 150s with 125 grain points and 4" shield cut feathers. I think they may be a little over spined. When the arrow leaves the bow I do notice a wobble for about 10 yards or so. Should you be able to see the wobble or should it fly perfectly straight?

They should fly perfect the entire time. Do a search for bareshaft and/or paper tuning.

Should I look for perfect arrow flight bare shafting? Would you suggest going to a 600 spine arrow?

If you think you are overspined, try a little heavier point, cheaper than new arras.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I just went through the tuning process with the same bow, my 45# Grizzly.  I ended up with a 7.5" braceheight and a 1/2" nock height.  I'm shooting Easton Gamegetter 500's (2016) cut to 31" and a 125gr point.  Arrows fly perfect with broadheads and fieldpoints.  Hope this helps, I had a lot of help from a lot of folks on here.  It definetly made my tuning much easier. Good luck.

Try a 250 or 300 gr. point! I'd bet that they'd straighten out.

I too have a 27" draw....maybe 28 on a really good day or with a clicker. I also shoot a couple of bows in the high #40 range. I shoot cx150's out of those bows with a 100gr. insert and a 200 or 250 gr. point. So that's almost the same setup with 300-350 grains up front. Any less weight up front and they start to kick. Try it!

Ok thanks...My other concern is by adding more weight my bow is going to be so slow. Right now it is only shooting 145 FPS with a 452grain arrow.

145fps isn't fast, but a 130fps arrow that flys great is better than a faster arrow that doesn't.  I would work with the arrows you have and try to get them flying good regardless of speed.

Once get dialed in you will have better idea of other arrow weight/spine combos that you could explore.

If speed is an issue you need a .600 spine arrow rather than the .487 you are currently shooting.

Try a 150 cut to around 28.5" with a 150 grain tip and a 50 grain brass insert. I think this will be very close.

I am thinking based on what I shoot that you are overspined, but you have to let the bow tell you that.  I think if you wanted to stay with 125 grain heads then you should be looking at 600 spine shafts.

I shoot a simmilar weight bow and have a 27 1/2" draw length. I also have some of those same shafts but I shoot 175 grains up front. No wobble. Give some extra weight up front a try.

Yeah you most likely are a little stiff. Add point weight as others have said but the CE 90's will be much better for you. I have a 49lb  bow and it likes the 90's better than the 150's.
