Any shed hunters in here?
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:47:00 PM »
With the unseasonably warm winter were are having here in IA I thought it would be a good time to get the trad bow out to go stumping and look for sheds in the mean time.  I'm planning on doing this next weekend & then also go to the Iowa Deer Classic.

Is there any shed hunters in here?  If so, maybe we could also post some pictures?

Honestly I've never really went out specifically looking for them.  Every once in a while I'll stumble upon one during turkey season, but I'm guessing a good majority of them are eaten by squirrels much before then.

Of all the sheds that I have found, this may be my favorite.

I love hunting shed antlers. I found this year old set in Dec on a late season elk hunt.

Our mulies and elk don't start shedding good until mid March.

I usually pick up over a hundred deer and elk sheds a year.

I find about 75 antelope horns a year as well.

That is how I got the name Shedrock. When I'm not hunting, I'm looking for sheds and arrowheads.

I'm always looking anytime I am in the woods, I found one yesterday while I was hog hunting. Can't do pics though.

LittleBigMan,  that is a very nice shed.  I have been checking all the web sites to see if they are dropping in Kansas yet.

Never considered myself a shed hunter, then in 2010 while spring turkey hunting I found this set.  It got me hooked.  I've found a few more since then, but nothing like these...Mike

Tracy - I knew pronghorns shed their sheath annually, but that is the first picture I've ever seen of shed sheaths, thanx for sharing.

Many photos about of freshly shed deer with bleeding pedicles, but does anyone have to share a photo of pronghorn horn core freshly shed. Surely with as many pronghorns out there someone would have a picture?

In the area I live/hunt the wintering grounds are usually flooded each spring which effectively nixes any shed hunting.
In two or three weeks though I am going to the southern part of the state to spend a weekend shed hunting with a friend.
Maybe after that I'll have some pics to share...

I have plans of trying to get out and hunt for sheds. Thought it'd be fun and possibly get some scouting done at the same time. I found the shed of a little 4 pointer at the family farm so I'm pretty eager to try and find some more.

These mulie sheds had a gross score of near 190", with an estimated outside spread of 34". Awesome deer. I have a pic somewhere of him wearing them.
