Wow. Wood arrows.
« on: February 24, 2012, 01:37:00 PM »
Well, let me start by saying I'm new to the trad game.  I've been shooting aluminum arrows.  On the advice of a good friend I called Suzanne and ordered a 1/2 Doz of her basic arrows.  Wow.  Holy Buckets.  Never say never but all things being equal I will probably never shoot an aluminum arrow again.  The difference was so marked, and the feeling so complete that to say I was astonished doesn't do the experience justice.  Wow.  Here's to Suzanne and wooden arrows.  I suspect I will be building my own soon....

Yeah, Sorry, I was uncertain about whether or not I could go into details.  It is Suzanne St. Charles.  Really nice work.  Exemplary.

I've had the same experience as you, started out with aluminum, and still have a very healthy respect for it, but...

I just love the look and the feel of wood.  I don't think it's nearly as durable, consistent, and it's kind of a pain in the butt...but I just love the feel of it leaving the string.

I don't make my own arrows, but I do enjoy wieghing, spine testing, tapering, straightening, finishing, and fletching my own shafts.

It's definitely a labor of love.  I can think of very little to justify the wood shafts besides the fact that I darn well like them, but that's good enough.

You are catching on quick!  There really is something about a wood arrow.  I brought one that had 4 big feathers out with me last week-end stump shooting, just for the heck of it.  I couldn't miss with it!  Quiet, too.  The last shot I took with it was another bull's eye, if there is such a thing on a stump.  A frozen stump.  A really hard frozen stump.  Busted the tip off!  At least I have 5 more just like it.  I checked the spine of the broken shaft on my reliable, old (real old) Lee Spine tester (made in MI).  It appears that I have about 5 dozen shafts of the same diameter and similar spine up in the closet, as well as a couple dozen arrows I purchased from Tollgate Archery last week.  So I am all set with woodies for a while.

As a died in the wool carbon shooter I have to admit I have started shooting wood arrows and I don't know what it is, but they ROCK. No tuning, no nothing they shoot out of all my bows 45-53# doesn't matter. If I miss out to 25 yards I know it's my fault. They're magic.

I have never shot wood, but all of the wood arrow talk just caused me to order a 1/2 dozen from Magnus. so I guess I will find out if I like wood or not.

Bada Bing.  That's it exactly.  I am really interested in simple things.  Essential things.  Basic things.  These arrows flew well without any "calculations" Simple.  Essential.  Basic.

Effective.

Plus when they get really customized they are a thing of beauty. My buddy had me stand at the corner of an out building and shot past it and aluminum is noisy as heck. The woods were just a whisper. It was an eye opener for me. I switched that day.

The thing I most like about cedar arrows is, they smell good when you make em and they smell good when you break em.

I love wood arrows, but for hunting and basically all my shooting I now use carbon. I have a limited budget and in the long run get more life out of carbon then I do woodies.

I absolutely love making and shooting wood arrows.  I shot only wood from 1995 up until last fall.

Last year I made up my first dozen carbons and I have to say, they fly very nice and are tough.  However, I feel as if I'm missing something and will be going back to wood arrows this year.
