Beaver Tail for your bow grip ???
« on: February 29, 2012, 08:46:00 PM »
Mod's hope this is OK.

I have some frozen beaver tails that I would like to use for a grip on my bow. Do I tan them or put them on raw.

You better get them tanned first or they will rot and get you run out of the house.

Good luck.

Others have put them on green, but I doubt you will like it too much. Green tails end up hard and crispy.
The only problem with getting them tanned is making sure the skive the tails down thin enough to form. A thick tail will only or "barely" work on a hill style grip.

good luck, bigjim

If I'm not mistakened lol, I think there is an article in Traditional Bowhunter that explains the whole process. It was Oct/Nov 2010 issue. I have it if you need it.

Bigjim knows of what he is talking about.  Doug, if you would like to see one of his grips, PM me and we can meet up somewhere. See pic...

My tanned beaver tail fit my Hill "Wild Boar" just fine. It was pretty stiff, but I soaked it in some water, made my fit cuts and punched holes for the stitching. I cemented it place, stitched it up and then wrapped it with blaze orange flagging tape. Left it for a day to dry. Turned out pretty good.

Big Jim, Do you have instructions available with your skins?  This is something I think I'd like to try on my longbow.  Thanks!

Good looking RAZORBACK bow. Woo Pig Sooie, Arkansas!!

I love the beavertail grips. If I were ambitious enough, I'd order some and regrip my bows. Snared a few beaver this past winter, decided NOT to do anything with them though.
