Antler limb bolts:::::::
« on: March 02, 2012, 11:22:00 PM »
i've been looking around on the "build alongs" and "how to " sections and havent found anything about making antler limb bolts (i may be blind though).  does anybody know where i could find some info on this?? i may try it if its not too difficult. if it looks to difficult, then i'll just buy some from somewhere. who sells them? i got a robertson fatal styk Z with a limb bolt  thunderhorn quiver. thanks in advance    seth

Bill Dunn at Zipper would be able to make you a pair if you decide to buy. I love the ones on my zipper extreme.

i did a search and found that sticshooter is one guy to get in touch with.Zip, bill dunn would also be great to talk to .  i really want to make my own as i like DIY projects, so if i could get a "how -to" it'd be nice!i got plenty of burrs and i got two of the longer bolts that i use on my limb bolt quiver,, thanks

There was a article in Traditional bowhunter about a year ago on doing them yourself.

here's a link that shows you how to make your own replica's, if you want the real thing...skip the first part and just follow the steps for attaching the bolts to the burr. MODS..i know this is a link from another site.. if not allowed, i understand

hope this helps...jc

I picked up a set from sticshooter last week.  Man does he do pretty work.  Perfect size for my RER.

I'd love to try to make a set...

Those are really pretty.

I like the looks of them and thought about a set for my Zipper but it seems my bow is always hung on a briar or vine as it is, and those look like they might add to the problem.

Just did these...hope it helps...

Cover the base with masking tape...this will keep epoxy from sticking later.

These pieces are used to mount the bolts and also hold them square to the burr while the epoxy is setting up.  I use 1 1/4" Stainless steel bolts and washers.

I scuff up the washer with 36 grit and gring some grooves into the top of the bolt...this helps give the epoxy something to grab.

7/8" Fostener bit...just a bit larger than the washer...

Use the dremel to put some small holes inside the burr...also to help the epoxy grab.

What it looks like before adding epoxy...

This 5min stuff works very well...smooth-on works great also...

Here they are clamped together.  Notice how the wood block keeps the bolt square to the burr...

I'll post some more after the epoxy sets up...

Ok, this is where the tape comes in handy.  Take off the top nut and remove the wood block.  This may take a couple pair of pliers as the spilled over epoxy should be stuck pretty well to the tape.

After the block is free, peal the tape from the bottom up...

Should look something like this...

If there is any leftover tape or epoxy, just sand it off.  After sealing, i use a black nylon washer just like the ones used with the bezels...works great!

I like this method because the head of the bolt and washer are actualy holding the limb to the bow...not the burr.  If the burr were to break off for whatever reason, the limb would still be attached and shootable.

This is just how I do them...could be better ways, but I hope it helps...Jared

In one of the back issue of TBM. Don't emember what number/year TBM. It was very good instruction and easy to do. I do remember JB weld was used instead of epoxy.
