Proper shooting tab sizing?
« on: March 18, 2012, 11:27:00 PM »
Hello,

When I started shooting trad a few months ago I bought a cheap glove at the local shop. Now I want to try a tab. I am currently shooting 3 fingers under. I anchor by touching my right index finger to my right canine tooth and touching the index feather on the arrow to my nose.I am using a deep hook into the first joint of my fingers. If I go to a tab should it cover my fingers entirely or should the tips of my fingers be exposed so I can feel my tooth?

I am thinking about a Bateman, Black Widow or Eagle Flight tab.

Thanks
Scott.

I like for my tab to leave a tiny bit of my finger exposed. I can feel my anchor better this way, and I don't get my lip chafed by the tab as I release.

If your tab is too long it will smack you in the face. Don't be afraid to trim it back a bit until you like it.

In my opinion, tab size is very important. I order my tabs according to the length of my middle finger. My middle finger is 3 1/8" long. So, when I order a Bateman cordovan tab, I order size "small"

Never bought one I didn't have to trim a tad, because three to four sizes don't fit all just right.

I wear X Large gloves and my tab is a medium.

Killy is right about smaking your face. I grab the string with a deep hook and trim what sticks past my fingers a little at a time. Cut just a little as you can't put back  what you cut off.

I'm currently testing out Bateman and BW  3-under tabs. Both a size "L"

Of the 2 the BW tab is bigger by enough that I can't get to my "tooth" anchor point, so, like others have already suggested, I'll be trimming it back.

The instructions from an Elite tab I tried mentioned using talc on the tab when shooting, and that after some shooting the "amount" of tab that is touching the string on release should become "outlined" and that this "outline" may guide how much you can trim it back. Never tried it myself, but sounded like an idea.

I ordered an EFA cordovan 3 under tab last night. I hope it works out.
