Fred Asbell interviews Steve Turray
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:24:00 AM »
Good for you Steve! I just saw the interview in TBM last night....I was there when Fred and Steve met at Shrewhaven. I remember how Steve was so proud that Fred liked his bow that day. Steve had come by for a visit, ended up staying 2 or 3 days and hunting. I recall coming down off of Banana Ridge, and catching some slight movement in the slashings across the grade....I put my binoculars on the movement after a time I located Steve, ever so slowly still hunting. Since that visit I have always liked Steve, I think it's awesome he is getting the recogniton he deserves.    :clapper:

I am with you Roger. Not only is Steve a first rate bowyer, but also a first rate individual. I have not had the opportunity to hunt with Steve, maybe one day who knows, but I have no doubt he is top rate in that aspect as well.

The interview was not only well written but well overdue. Great job Mr. Asbell and kudos to you Mr. Turay!

X2 Roger. I own one of Steve's bows.  He does a fine job on his bows. He was also a good friend of my dads up there in the U P eh.

Roger,

I smiled when I saw the interview article and I remember that hunt still.  I've got a picture of you, Ron, Fred and I behind the Shrewhaven cabin, but I think Steve was still out stillhunting.  Steve is as good as they come.  I remember giving him a dozen or so Microflite #12's years ago at the Grayling MTB shoot after he made a little longbow for my son on short notice.  His eyes lit up like the fourth of July. I knew he loved heavy arrows. He's given more to the sport and organizations of MI than most can comprehend.  As said above, the accolades and recognition is long overdue.

Steve, is a great guy. I picked up one of his bows on a trade and had some questions about the bow that he answered. I also had a concern about the string that was on the bow when I received it after the trade. He asked a few questions about the bow I received and asked for my address, a few days later I had not one but two strings for the bow. That was not expected at all especially when I did not purchase the bow from him. Class act all the way.  :clapper:    :clapper:    :clapper:

Steve and his awesome wife have been coming down to the May shoot in Baltimore since it was still called the MATC.  He does well there because he makes a GREAT bow, for a very reasonable price.  He is also one of the really good guys in Trad Archery.  He is always willing to talk to other bowyers about how they can improve their bows and is always improving his own.  We are fortunate, here in Maryland, that he is willing to make that long trip to Baltimore each year.  (When he gets to Detroit, he is only HALF WAY THERE!) Dang, that UP is REALLY way up there.
I just hope his magazine curse has gone away! (Ask him sometime about it.)
