This about sums it up.
« on: April 07, 2012, 08:06:00 AM »
The quote came from an outdoor writer on the subject of hunting with a single shot rifle, but I could not agree more.

"As far as I'm concerned there isn't a purer way to hunt big game unless it's with a recurve or a long bow. The rest is just letting technology take the place of skill. The more technology you use, the lower your position on the skill totem pole."

When I rifle hunt I hunt with a Ruger #1 which is a single shot rifle and I see nothing about it being more pure or less pure than any other type of firearm. In my opinion the weapon one choses has little to do with how pure or how high up the "skill totem pole you are". I know some dam skillful hunters who use rifles and have never touched a bow.

Quotes like this just lead to elitist attitudes and divide one group of hunter against another group. It is the man behind the weapon not the weapon that makes one pure or skillful.

I wont even get into the technology argument as I string my modern recurve with glass and carbon limbs and my dacron string ready to shoot my carbon arrow shafts with my steel broadheads.

Disagree.  Some of the finest woodsmen and hunters I have known don't choose limiting equipment.

I often do, and for me it adds to the overall enjoyment and the satisfaction when it all comes together, but equipment choice and skill aren't necessarily related.  I have hunted with compound users and 1000 yard rifle users that certainly surpass me in the woods even though I prefer hunting with a simple bow.

He did say "As far as I'm concerned..."  So his statement is correct for him.
