« on: April 10, 2012, 08:26:00 PM »
Hello everyone,

New to trad. archery and was wondering a good range for GPP on a 43# mild r/d longbow....was thinking 7-12 or am I incorrect?

Any advice would be much appreciated..

Thanks, Craig

I use hunting arrows.  I like practicing with what I will be hunting with
62" Super D, 47#s @ 25-1/2"
58" TS Mag, 53#s @ 26"
56" Bighorn, 46#s @ 26.5"

I like 10 gpp for hunting and target shooting. For. 43# bow i personally would shoot a 400-430 grain finshed arrow weight

For me, everything is a prep for hunting...so the same arrows I'll be hunting with. Somewhere between 10-12gpp.

Good quality bow, just over 8gpp should work fine.

7 to 12 is quite a big difference!   I think you'll find some bows will have better manners with a heavier shaft while others bows are pretty forgiving. I always find 9 - 10 grains per inch to be a happy marriage of speed and forgiveness.  Go too heavy and the arrow will seem loggy in flight, go too light and you'll be all over the place with your accuracy.

Allen has a real good release so he can get away with a lighter shaft.  If I go that light my bow gets noisy and my accuracy suffers.
