1st Turkey with a bow!
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:33:00 PM »
Just have to brag a little.
Today I harvested my first turkey ever with a bow!
I used a 53# Black Widow, 5535 GT shafts & 150gr Snuffers.
The shot was a little high but it all worked out ( the snuffer just about took his head off).
The best part is my daughter was along and this was the first time she witnessed a kill. in her own words " I thought I was gonna pass out"! She was excited to say the least (me too).

Ok so here is the story.
Saturday, opening day in KY found my son and I tucked in the blind at 6am waiting on shooting light. At sunrise the birds started sounding off. We had a gobbler hammering back from the next ridge over. A distance probably better measured in a ¼ mile than yards. After about an hour all went quite. I waited about 30 min before letting out a series of yelps. To my surprise I got an answer not more than 70 yards to the left. My son was fast asleep in the floor of the blind and I decided to let him be. The Tom came in spitting and drumming to about 30 yards and stopped. I had a Jake and Hen decoy out and he was watching them closely. He strutted back and forth for about a minute then he let out a put and took off. I’m convinced he was scared off by the decoys. We saw 4 more hens before leaving to try to beat a coming storm…

Sunday it was my daughters turn to tag along. We were in the same spot at sunrise.
The sun broke with fewer gobbles but we did have a gobbler answering from behind and to the left. After about 30 min of calling he had closed the distance to what sounded like about 50 yards but we couldn’t see him from our location. That’s when a hen walked by headed for the gobbler. We could still hear him but he was traveling the other direction probably following the hen. I told my daughter we would stay put and he would probably come back when he was done with the hen. We were quietly sitting about 10am when I spotted a bearded hen leave the woods to our left. I decided to let out a yelp and to my surprise I got an answer not 50 yards to the right. With a quick peek I could see the top of a fan headed our way. I reached over and told my daughter not to move and the gobbler proceeded to spit and drum to within 10 yards of the blind. That’s when he let out a gobble and my daughter just about came unglued (me too). He past the blind at 6 yards and I drew. As I drew he stopped and proceeded to take a step directly away. Of course the small band of material the holds the top of the blind to the bottom was right in the way. After a couple steps he turned and continued his progress and I released. The shot hit high and to the left but squarely in the neck. I knew we had him. I found him a short ways down the hill flapping his wings unable to continue.
