Sights for Wife's recurve
«

I could waste the next hour of your life giving you details but I'm a nice guy and I won't. Long story short, my wife is insisting she wants a sight on her Sammick recurve, or I buy her a compound. I have never had any sights on any of my trad bows. I need your recomendations on what to put on there. An **** item number or a link would be awesome. It does have the holes in the riser to mount most standard style sights.
Note: Please, do not post to say that I need to teach her to shoot the gap or shoot by instinct..............believe me, that is part of the story I am sparing you........Just need some help

I would look at 3Rivers, they now carry some sights that I think will fit a Samick recurve.

I think it is great you are helping your wife with this request.
Nothing untraditional about sights on a recurve. They were doing it long before the compound came along.
I bought a Bear Mag that came with the integral sight in the window. For giggles I moved the pin where I thought it should be and tried my "compound form" out. OM GOSH! I couldn't believe how much easier it was to shoot a group by simply seeing that little pin head instead of a great big arrow point or even bigger "gap".
I immediately took the sight away for fear it would ruin my ability to shoot groups that were 3 times larger!

lol
Nothing wrong with some pins.
Hopefully the sight window is large enough to accommodate a pin in the right spot AND still have enough room for a fletched arrow to pass thru.
...I had that problem on my first recurve.
My initial plan was to set a bow up with high tech compound sights, use a release aid the whole 9 yds...didn't work out...lol
I'm glad it didn't..I like this bare bow stuff.

The cheap & easy way is to take a bracket & pins off an old compound, or look through the bargain bin at you local shop. Unless she's used to modern fiber optics with bubble levels, etc.- then a $30 3-pin TruGlo from a big-box store would work.

Maybe an old cobra mount like the one in this pic.
I took these a while ago to show a grip...the pics don't show the sight all that well but you'll get the idea....

All great, I'll look for an old pin sight. Question, do I put a peep in the string or just put a knock up there for alignment?

I would not use a peep but maybe a kisser button for her. Nothing at all wrong with shooting a sight on a curve. Heck Rusty tells me back in the early 60s he was chastized for shooting without one as 80% of the folks shot sights.

Is she shooting the bow for recreation or does she plan to hunt?
For recreation, I would get her a Cartel Starter Sight. But if she is looking to hunt with it, you may want to get her something a little sturdier.
I'd also suggest using an open aperture instead of a pin.

My dad had an archery shop back in the 50's and 60's. I have quite a few old sites that you can tape onto your wifes bow or screw it on if you desire. I would tape it one. If you want a single pin tape on site give me a PM and its yours. just need an address.
My Uncle was one of the top site shooters in the US back in the 60's.

Am I the only one that thinks it is wrong to open up this great traditional archery forum to discussions of sights? I am very disappointed. why not just get out the old 30-06? Alex

Yep Alex your wrong this time. :D Try taping a hat pin to the front of the riser so she can try a site before mounting one. Real easy to move the pin that way, and easy to change out to more permanent settings. You can even find pins with different color heads so she can pick the one she sees the best.

Cascade archery has a nice little sight they call a "mini bowsight". It is simple and made well.

If there is not enough clearance between arrow and pin, as described above, have your wife lower her anchor point, even to below her chin.

I use sights on one of my trad bows, and don't use a kisser or peep. Just a consistent anchor point (top tooth for me), and string in front of the eye, lined up with the sight pin.
I like the old Merrell-type sights, for a flush profile with the bow... somewhat similar to the one GrayRhino posted above. Someone on another thread mentioned sticking an eraser or Q-tip stick on the riser, to stick a pin into, to use for a sight. That seems like a good idea to me.

Thanks so much for all the input guys. I actually ordered one off of **** before I saw the offers (very generous I might add) for a sight. As one guy who pm'd me put it, (in my words) right or wrong, like sights or not, at least my wife will shoot with me........
