Help! BW PSA V Ironwood >> arrow
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:20:00 PM »
Olá (Hi in portuguese) gang,

Here I go again searching for opinions.

Just bought a BW PSA V ironwood, gorgeous bow, from a tradgang member. Don't have it yet and can't wait to put my hands on it...

But here's the deal. I live in Portugal, beautiful country in every way, but with very few archers, and even less archery shops. So almost everything I have is ordered from the States, and it take's some time to get here.

That being said, I'm trying to do some homework in advance and would like to ear your opinions on arrows.

I will prefer carbon and my goal is to hunt wild boar with it.
The bow is 60" 53#@28.

I use on my Samick Stingray, FMJ 500 with 125 bh. Haven't weighed them yet but I figure they are around 480 gr total weight which I think is low for wild boar.

I keep reading here that most of you use stiff spines. What then? Heavy points to weaken the shaft? How do you get arrows with 600 and more grains? All in the point weight? Or stiff shafts with hi gpi are heavy already?

I ear a lot about GT tradicional and here in Portugal, people talk a lot about the GT Heavy Hunter.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for helping ans looking.

Diogo

We don't know your draw length yet.   :readit:

I think you will be able to get 600 grains total with a GT Trad and a heavy head. Use an aluminum sleeve at the head to reinforce it. (Do a search on aluminum footing here.)

I shoot 30" mfx  classic 400's out of my recurve at about the same weight. I'm shooting 52# at my draw.  You will have to mess around with arrow length and point weight but these shafts allow a nice heavy arrow.

I should add I use the 75 gr brass hit inserts and 150 or 175 gr points.

Sorry Killdeer, you're completely right. I figure I will maitain 28 draw length or a bit more.

Marco, thanks, can't wait to shoot it. I will have a look at Stu's calculator.

I have used that exact set up and let me tell you.. you can get some awsome flying heavy arrows with the AD line of carbons.

I am now moving over to wood.  Not due to any improved performance or anything like that.  Just enjoying them more and they are good and heavy.

But if I were shootin carbons again (and likely will someday) it will be right back to the AD Trad Lites and AD Hammer Head Lites.  Tough as nails and less tricky to tune for me.

GT trad 5575 100 brass inserts and play with point weight and length. You will get what you need. Get test points 125-200.

I have had a few widows about 50 @ 28 with 29" draw.   30" or so 5575 with 100 brass insert and one of those points usually gets it.  Cut a little off and up point weight to get what you want for weight.

Best deal going is to get with Big Jim when blems are in stock. He has all the rest of the stuff you need also.

Don't trust charts and calculators. Do the testing and cutting. Takes a while, but you don't want to mess up on arrows when you have to ship out of the country. there are too many variables and I find carbon shoots better a lot weaker than most charts and calculator says.
