My verison of a Rocky Mtn Recurve
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:20:00 AM »
First off I want to thank Jess Stuart for helping me with the design.

I've been looking for a RMR for several months now and couldn't find one. Since I couldn't find one I decided to give a shot at making my own.

After talking to Jess he gave me quite a bit of info in what it takes to get the design right.

All I like is steelwooling it with 0000 steelwool to remove the high gloss.

The few shots I took before spraying tells me it's going to be a nice shooting bow. I'll know more once I have several hundred arrows through it.

The riser is CheChen and Bubinga with Maple accent stripes.

The limbs are Lamboo core inside black glass.

I stippled the grip as I've done on my past few bows.

Finished stats are 62" AMO  60#@28"

Again Thanks Jess....  :notworthy:

I like the whole bow! If it was #50, it would be perfect for me. I like the stippling, have done a couple factory bows like that, seems to really get hold of your hand.

Troy, that is a great looking bow.  I been waiting for this one to show up, very nice indeed. Great wood choice, love the stippling.
It is good to see another remake of a classic, they are a very nice looking and shooting bow.
You are most welcome but thanks are not necessary, you wouldn't believe all of the help people offered me on my first ones, just passing it on a little.

The gloss finish is now history. Really looks great to me. All it needs now is the strike plate, shelf pad, and most likely string silencers.

Troy my experience with them is they need very little silencing.  That is one of the things I truly love about them is how quite they are, especially since I shoot three under.  Again, absolutely stunning!!

Jess,

If it wasn't for the twang of the string I doubt you would hear it when shot.

I'm using a 12 strand padded loop DF-97 string.

I cut the sight window to center, the velcro strike plate puts it just before center. I just tried to shoot my arrows and I can see right now I'll need to build out the strike plate. 800grs still gets to the target pretty quick. Much faster than they did out of my 55# bow.

Owl,

The Kingwood and Flaming Ambrosia Maple bow will be in the works in a few weeks.

I've been shooting the RMR today. Havn't chronied it yet. All I know is it's shooting really great. Smoothest 60#er I've made.

Troy

Good on you for building it!

I had an RMR years ago-all oak if u can believe it

There's no doubt in my mind it was the fastest shooting bow I've ever owned and like a lot of things in life I mistakenly got rid of it

I've looked without success for another

Yours is remarkably similar

Enjoy ur splendid craftsmanship

Owl,

I debated making this one 63#@29" ( I marked the bow 60#@28")or in the mid 50's. After I started grinding the laminations for it talked myself into the higher weight.

Don't regrete it one bit. Since increasing my arrow weight several years ago I felt the higher weight would give better cast. No doubt it did.

Ray,

Thanks for the compliments. As Jess Stuart said "too many of the classics have been pass over for the new looks and designs". I always liked the looks of the RMR and now I have my own.

Whatever weight it is I'm looking forward to seeing pics and hearing how those veneers perform. If you make it to Compton's I would like to look it over for sure!
