Stu's DSC - HELP!!
« on: April 24, 2012, 07:20:00 AM »
Hi gang,

I'm having a little trouble understanding Stu's Calculator.

I bought a BW PSA V 60" 53#@28 and I draw 28. Will receive it this week.

On a different thread I asked about arrows and a lot of you advised me GT 5575 trad with 100 grn insert's, 175 or so bh and maybe 29" bop. 3x5" feathers. A good guy even told me that he had a BW PSA 60" 52#@28 and he used this set-up and that bare-shafted really well.

When I put this info on Stu's calculator, the bow spine is 70,8 and the arrow spine is 52,2. (!?)

If I change the arrow to GT 7597trad and change the bh to 190, the arrow spine comes 70,4.

On the instructions is said that these two numbers should be nearly equal, but I'm afraid the GT 7595 wold be to stiff.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks

Correction, the value of bow spine is 73,4.

I would like to have 10 GPP minimum.

Anybody uses 7595?

I've often ended up with an arrow that wasn't as stiff as stu's calculator called for.

The 7595 will be way too stiff and arrow weight will be close to 730 grs by the time you get enough point weight on.I wouldn't get too excited till I had the bow in hand and did some bare shaft testing.I would start with the setup that the fellow used that has a similar Widow and see what happens. The calculator works very well for some people but bare shafting has to be the deciding factor.

I don't have a Widow but with my bows that weight, what Ranger 3 suggests,is about what I would require with a 5575.That should be app 500 grs.I put aluminum footings front and back for app 16 grs and an 8" cap wrap is 12 grs.Total then, with a 30" arrow and 200 grs on the front would be 530 grs.

If it were me,I would start with the standard aluminum inserts and not permanently glue them in till you start to see how much front end weight you will need.

Keep in mind, different people may require a slightly different setup but the bareshaft will work that out.

I shoot 55/75 with 250 up front, 3 4inch feathers. Weighs in at 545+/- . I shoot a HH Cheetah 56@28, Lost Creek Judge 54@28 & a Kota Prairie Fire 52@28. These arrow shoot very good from all these bows. Just saying, works good for me.

A Black Widow I might add will shoot a pretty wide range of arrows equally well due to its shelf being past centershot.

Won't hurt to try a 200 up front and compare its flight to the 175.

My own experience suggests that the 200 up front in conjuntion with the 100 insert may surprise you.

Note: Achieving proper arrow flight remains individualistic.

A set-up more in line with what I actually would use and evaluate per the supplied specifications would be:

29.5" Victory VForce HV...100 gn insert....250 gn BH....565 total...10.7 gpp and 29.6 EFOC.

Note: This arrow may penetrate equal to or greater than a normal arrow design weighing substantially more. Surprisingly 50 grains more will actually demonstrate visibly greater pnetration due to exceeding 30%. Fifty grain increases or decrease have never provided me any significant differnces until experimenting with this set-up. If you go with the 400 up front, then be well prepared for increased target replacement expenses.

Hello,
Both the 5575 and the 7595 can be made to work.  If you want >10 GPP then the 7595 is for you.  Here is the setup I would reccomend:
GT 7595 Trad, cut to 30" BOP with a 100 gr brass insert and a 160 gr point.  Std GT nock, no wrap and three 5" feathers.  Total weight should be 611 gr (11.5 GPP) with a FOC% of 19.7.  Predicted speed (New DSC corrected for stroke and finger release)is 171 fps.

Thanks gang,

I think I'm gonna try the CE Heritage 250 with 100 gr up front and try a test kit for point weight.

Let's see what happens.
