GPI average for different wood shafting
« on: April 24, 2012, 09:43:00 PM »
Anyone have data on grains per inch on average for different types of wood shafting? That would be a cool set of data to have.

Doesn't exist.  For any given size and type of wood, weight can vary by more than 100 grains.  For example, individual 11/32 POC shafts spined at 60 # might weigh anywhere from 375 to 500 grains.  Nice thing is most vendors sell shafts in a wide range of spine and weight groupings so you can get the weight shaft you want in the spine you want.

Alot of variences in wood even in the same spine range. Some of my woods like in the 70-74# weigh in the 525 to 550 range. But have some 70-74# woods weigh 650 to 670,both were POC.

This is a good spread sheet on weights within spine groups for douglas fir. Not all fall within these perimeters. Some are heavier and some lighter. You have a lot of options with fir!

Wood differs in its' density (and thus, weight) amongst boards of the same species.  You might want to tackle this from the approach of what gpi will give you the total gpp you're wanting to shoot with your chosen point/broadhead.
