45# bow and GT 3555's??
« on: April 25, 2012, 07:44:00 AM »
I have a Big Jim Thunderchild coming and I draw about 28.5 and dw will be 45#'s. Bow is center cut with about 1/16 side plate. 18 strand stock string.

I would like to front load some GT 3555's and have some 100 grain inserts.  Will 175 grain tips give me a good tune.

I think 175 will be to much with a 100 grain insert.  Would start with a 50 and go from there...

I shoot 29" 3555's with standard inserts and 160gr. points out of my 45# Mojo Stik and they fly like laser beams! Just keep on experimenting...that's half the fun!!

You might also consider the 1535s.

not sure about those, but I shoot the same setup. I use carbon express 150's w/ 100 gr inserts and 125 gr points. Arrows are right at 28" IIRC.

I draw 29 inches and 3555s work well in all my mid 40s bows. I use standard inserts and 200 grain tips on full length arrows.
Having done so much, with so little, for so long, I can now do anything with nothing.

I shoot 190 grains total up front on a similar setup.

How long do you plan on having your arrows?

I might go 30" arrows 100gr insert with 100gr points and start from there. I can shoot 3555s at full length out of a 40lb longbow center cut with regular inserts and 200gr points with excellent results. There's a definite arch to the flight out at 20 yards. Out to about 12-15 they are great. Point of aim is about 24 yards.

I would put a 50 grain brass insert and play with the point weight. It will give you more options.

I will start with full length, I think they are 30"s and can probably trim 1/2" off

Good starting point--however, every bow is a different animal--you'll have to experiment to find the best shaft/weight/bh for your bow--

No matter what material it's made of, 18 strands is a whole lotta string for a 45# bow. I believe I'd start with a different string, but that's just me.

I shoot a 46# recurve, GT 3555, 100 gr insert, 125 WW Elite.  Good flight.

I agree too. I think 10-12 strands of B50 would be plenty. If using D97 or other fast flight string material 8 strands would be plenty. Your bow will be quieter, have less hand shock, and may even gain a bit of performance.

I use 12 strands of B55 for the 40lb and up to 50lb.

I shoot a 44# Thunderchild, 29.5" GT 3555, 3-5" LW feathers, standard insert and 145 gr. field point. Seemed to be the right combo. For the record, 2016 aluminum with standard inserts and 125 gr. tips shoot well also from my TC.

Great info, I need to give some consideration to a different string.
