first attempt at woodies

Started by getting some sticks from Rob (KidStix).  I had a crappy electric screw driver that won't drive a screw to save a life, but it works great for spinning arrows.

Anyway..here are the pictures.  I quite enjoyed doing the cresting.  Didn't enjoy attaching the fletchings as much.  But with how poorly my wife and I shoot at the 3D range, I'll have an excuse to make more arrows soon enough  :)

Thanks to the board for all the arrow and cresting ideas.

Nice job! I'm with britt, after the first dozen (all the same), I knew I'd have a "better" idea the next time so I always do 4-6 at a time to prolong the enjoyment out of a dozen shafts...

Thank you all for the kind words.

yep...I'm totally with you guys.  I used a couple of dowel rods from the hardware store to test.  So I've already got a bunch of other ideas for colors and designs.  I cheated a little and used Sharpies and paint pens.  So once the paint of the background had dried,the rest of the cresting went fast.

I didn't buy more shafts as I'm still a new archer and know my draw weight will be increasing for a time.  I'm making 3 new bows over the next few weeks.  They will all be up in the 45-55# range.  If any of those turn out to be good shooters, I'll go ahead and order a few dozen shafts and go crazy.

Very nice. I started out making arrows with cap dips, lots of creasting, spliced fletching, etc but these days my arrows are pretty simple. Stained cedar, three band crest and occasionaly I'll match the nocks to the dyed barred fletching. I've used alot of turkey feathers but since my chopper has gotten dull I mostly just buy fletching. I plan on digging my feather burner out of the attic and using it for a simple pattern on my turkey fletching.
 Has anyone one else noticed that as you get older your arrows take on a plainer, simpler appearance?
