Going after a Thunder Chicken
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:47:00 PM »
I leave at 3:30am in the morning. Going to make the 15 hour drive to Kansas to try and get me a thunder chicken. I've never hunted them before. Wish me luck!
I'll be shooting my Zona 3 piece recurve.

Good Luck!! You'll probably come home hooked on turkeys and wonder why you didn't start sooner. Sometimes I think they are funner to hunt than deer.

Well I made it up after 16 hours of driving and went straight to the property and found birds in the first place I checked!
I watched a long beard and 4 jakes with a few hens till nearly dark, when I looked up from the bino's there was a gobbler coming over a rise just 70 yards away! I got low and nicked an arrow and he was running towards me. He had some hens behind him and turned and went back to them. Wow what a rush!
Setup this morning where I thought they would fly down and we could call them in. Only problem was my buddy forgot the decoys. We had birds in front of us right at first light. They got within 60 yards but wouldn't come closer. They fed off out into the field. Wasn't long heard one behind us. It took an hour but they finally worked their way down in front of us but they were hugging the treeline! Grrrr it's 40 yards to the treeline! The long beard came by but never close enough. Heading back out this afternoon with decoys
