It's a long story but I booked a black bear hunt a couple years ago,in Northern Saskatchewan but had to postpone it for two seasons. It seems there are always too many things going on this time of year and this one is no exception.
I've been talking to the outfitter and though he had me penciled in for May 13th,he had told me I could come one of the later weeks if that worked better.
Well, yesterday I decided I'm going but the 13th was too early to get everything done that I needed to.I called last night to set a date.I found out that the 27th was no longer viable. There were too many hunters booked already.I had told him the 13th was just cutting it too close for me so he said the 20th would work. There would even be some hunters in camp that I know well.
As an after thought,he said " it's a shame you couldn't make it on the 13th because there are going to be some big bears hitting the baits and you would be the only hunter in camp."What?"We talked a couple minutes,my wheels spinning and I said,"put me down for the 13th".This is going to be a tough week but on the 12th of May,I'm pointing my truck North.
This will be my 3rd trip there and I once hunted the same week on short notice,as the only hunter in camp.It isn't one of those slam dunk hunts with tons of bears sighted but the big boars are moving and they have some BIG boars, though they are cagey. The great thing is,with no other hunters in camp,I'll get to hunt the best of the best stands, every day.
Anyway,I won't predict any outcome and that really isn't a big deal to me because in a little over a week,I'll be sitting in the big North woods with a bow in hand.I'm more than a little pumped.
Good luck to all you Spring bear hunters.I look forward to reading some stories.
