man is it hard to get the draw on a gobbler!
« on: May 05, 2012, 02:29:00 PM »
had a great morning hunting with Adirondackman up on my favorite mountain. set up PERFECT. gobblers sounded off as if on cue. took a bit but John got them worked up and coming in! i was behind a big pine just under the lip of a little ridge so that when they came over and i saw them they would be in range. after some sweet talk from John up pop 3 heads, a bodd gobbler and 2 jakes. they were looking in John's direction and 15 yards away from me, PERFECT!!!! i BARLEY put tension on the string and all 3 heads snapped to attention, GAME OVER!!! put put put put and away they go, WHAT A RUSH!!!!! guess i have a little more to learn on proper set up but i THOUGHT i had it pretty good. to much fun to even be up set! thats hunting my friends and i'll remember it for a loooooong time!

The title of your thread says it all ... those buggers have exteremly acute vision with an incredible field of view! I had a heckuva time killing a turkey until I resigned myself to only drawing my bow when there was no chance of them seeing me. It really hurts when a guy gets schooled by a bird with a brain the size of a pea!!! Unfortunately, I have had heaps of schooling from those no good sobs!  :biglaugh:
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Don't ya just hate that "Putt, Putt, Putt" sound, followed by a quick exit. I have heard that too many times myself.

Good for you Ken. You may not have killed the bird but you felt the rush & shared a wonderful day with a friend. Keep @ it. I've been sick in bed last couple of days. Finally got out @ 10 this morning. Saw 12 birds total. Had a gobbler & Jake 10 yards away but could not get them to cross the posted land to me. So close. Keep at it guys.

Called 3 jakes inside 10 yards the other day. Heard that putt putt putt. Soooo fun but extremely frustrating!

After too many years of that sort of thing I found that the Double Bull blind fixed it. I know some like to do it from natural blinds but at my age I wanted to shoot at least a few before I couldn't any more.

They must have winded ya.   :readit:

I wish I had known everyone had backed out, i would have came up today.

Glad you had a GREAT hunt.  You are better off when only one tom comes in, sounds like this was a case of too many eyes!

Awesome none the less!

They can see you thinking about pulling the string.  You don't actually have to put pressure on it.

I proven to myself two things about turkeys. 1. They have x-ray vision and they can see if you have a turkey tag in your pocket. 2. I have to shoot Hill longbow style fast to get a turkey, if they are still there when the arrow gets to them, I have a good chance, if not, just another day educating turkeys.

A lot of bowhunting deer hunters get humbled quickly when they first take up bowhunting turkeys.

You aren't the first and you won't be the last.

There's no other rush like it to me. Ken you did good just to get them in bow range. Keep after them. If possible I like to have a few trees out in front of me within bow range and draw when his head goes behind one. Maybe you will catch him alone without all the other eyes. Saying that though great setups are hard to come by. Good huntin Dave
