I use a mark on my arrows.  Its been the quickest way for me to check.

I crest wrap my arrows to the strike plate on my recurve (6") which just happens to be on the lip of the shelf on my longbow and then butt another inch of a different color (always blood red) forward of that so I'm always checking my brace height.

Alright fella's,
I tried to re defind the topic cause I was trying to just explain a different method other then using the fist and thumb fistmele, the arrow cresting or just measure it with a rule ways of checking the brace /fistmele of your string...I should of clarrified that I have done the same as just about everyone else has with the arrow and what I was getting at was if you do serve your own strings that this was just another way that' is handy and right there at your fingertips so to speak...It's not the only way I know and the other methods are just as good but to those who could benefit from this was why I posted it and should of re worded the topic....Sometimes I don't think before I post and don't know just how to word something.. I'm a   :knothead:

Al (outback).  you are spot on, except. . .  I need to grow longer thumbs for a couple of my bows.

Also,  the term was likely in vogue when bow handles were essentially flat, ie  English longbow.  I guess I can put my hand against the string and insert my thumb into the locator cut out. or measure at another location, likely above the shelf.  Doesn't matter where you measure it, so long as you always measure the same place.

I tend to make certain arrows for certain bows and have something. .  a band on the cap dip, the end of the feathers,. .   something. .  that marks the correct brace height on the arrow, so I put it on the string and look down to check it.

Master arrow maker Mike Vines From the Motor City Machete Shop had a good idea for brace hight checking purposes. He put a cresting line on his arrows.
I like it alot.

Different bows could be different colors.

EDIT: Should have read page 2 before my above post.Mike has already been here.
I have pretty big hands and can only get 7" of Fistmele unless I strech hard. Alot of modern bows require more than 6-7" of brace. MHO

actually, I love it.   I just put a couple wraps of thread on my existing strings that are already served at 10", different color for each bow, from the top of the serving down to that string is the brace height.  thanks for the idea!
