Two VT Turkeys
« on: May 07, 2012, 10:31:00 PM »
I just had a great week of VT spring turkey hunting.  On May 1st, in a pouring rain I was able to take a 20 lb bird with a 9.5 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.  I roosted him the night before the opener and headed out in the am despite the rain.  He only gobbled once on the roost.  Never heard him fly down but soon could see him across the field.  One soft call to get his attention and he was on his way.  He beat up on my decoy pretty good before giving me a clear shot.  As he turned to leave I hit him with a Simmons TreeShark and he only made it 60 yards.  The pictures aren't great because of all the rain.

This morning was just a classic hunt.  Clear and crisp.  The full moon was beautiful.  The bird was alone and gobbled a lot on roost.  I set up close and called sparingly while he was in the tree.  After he flew down he immediately started strutting.  I gave a couple clucks and he started toward me.  As I purred on my slate he closed the distance.  He was really spitting and drumming as he reached the deke.  He turned broadside and I was able to make a perfect shot.  He didn't even make it a step.  17 lbs 9oz. 8.5 in beard.  7/8 spurs.  Here are a couple pics.

Thanks everyone.  I was using my trusty Black Widow with black limb covers.  61 @29.  Simmons treeshark broadheads which I can't recommend highly enough.  Just awesome on turkeys.  I use a string tracker with Guru's set up.  I also use Joebuck's wooden hen as a call.  For decoys I had a jake set up over a hen like he was getting ready to breed her.  Seemed to work great this year.

Congrats!!  Birds around here have been very reluctant to come to calls.  they will respond, but tend to move away before they even see a decoy.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.
