What does a guy really need for moose
« on: May 28, 2012, 07:05:00 PM »
Hey everybody. My dreamhunt is for a Canada moose and I had a 70# @31 carbon r/d longbow spitting 650gr arrows in the mid 190's but due to a bad bout of lymes I can no longer shoot her. My other bow pulls 53# and gets arrows 505gr going high 160's. Is this enough bow or should I be looking for a better preformer? 53# is the limit my body can handle and recurves are a bad option for me as my draw tends to streach out to 33". Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Drew
I shoot a little to the left no matter what I do. except of course for the ones that hit to the right or high. the ones that land in the dirt a foot in front of the target sometimes bug me.

58#@26 osage flatbow with a home made fir shaft with a 140 journeyman broadhead.

Well that is what worked for my friend in Canada last year, on TWO Bulls. 6 days apart.

Good luck on your hunt

Key is smooth performance, good shot placement, and sharp broadheads.  Your wet-up should be OK.    :coffee:      :archer2:     :archer2:     :archer2:

Just to give you a idea about another 53# bows performance. I just got a Blackwidow CHX 53@28 I draw 26.5" I am shooting 517gr arrows at 177fps. You could get alot better performance with some other bows at your drawl length thats not to say your setup would not work just giving you some food for thought. I never hunted moose but would like to and if I did I would use this setup.  Widow

I think most of all you need some pals to help haul out all the meat!

Have a great hunt!

My experience mirrors the guys above. Shot about a 1000# bull moose in Maine which died in sight in seconds. Complete penetration. 54# LB, No Mercy BH, and 750 gr. carbon arrow. I opted for the "heavyweight" arrow set up. Good hunting and have fun. Todd

Hi Drew, if you're going to hunt Moose in Ontario you need a bow that will have a draw weight of at least 48.5 lbs. at draw length of 27.6" or less. As long as you are that you are GOOD TO GO as they say! Have a great hunt and shoot straight,...Lloyd

Take your best shot from the side or 1/4 away, and you'll be eating moose steaks.

A lot of barbecue sauce.  Har har har.

I grew up in Alaska, and heard lots of guys tell of shooting moose.  I didn't have a lot of interest in hunting them, because they just seemed like a big galumpy animal that we had to chase out of our garden all the time.  And when we went to church pot lucks, I had all the moose meat I could handle.  But I heard that moose are big wimps, easy to kill.  My dad killed a 70-inch bull with a bow about 30 years ago, and said it was about like sneaking up on and shooting a jersey cow.  Now I know that everyone's experiences are different, but my understanding is that they're not very tough.

Re-reading this post, it sounds a bit harsh; that's not how I mean it to be.  Dad just always said he was surprised at how quickly and easily that big moose just collapsed after one arrow.

Your bows find.
It's all in the head (sharp) and arrow placement.
