Stumpin help for a rookie

Ok...I can shoot the bow with some confidence now and would like to move beyond the backyard and go out and shoot some stumps.  I hear a lot of talk around here about how that can help alot and it would be fun to do with my daughter. So, the question is...where does one go to hunt the wild and rangey stump?  I dont have land of my own, don't know a farmer or rancher and don't think it would be appreciated at the local park!! What kind of land should I look for?  Thanks!!!

Now "Stumping" does not mean just shooting stumps.  It refers to Roving or just wondering around shooting at what ever target catches your eye.  A bush a plant on the ground, a fallen and rotten log, a dirt bank.  The options are endless.  Just make sure you have a blunt head that won't be easily lost.  If you are shooting carbons a simple washer between the head and shaft works pretty good.

We go to state land a lot. Stumps, pine cones, flowers, a knot on a log. Use your imagination....a log becomes a bedded elk. A tall stump is a standing bear, a branch in the path is a snake, you get the idea.......a remember...be safe and have fun!!

Stumping is almost as much fun as actual hunting, and will really sharpen your shooting eye. If you have a buddy to go with, the competition is lots of fun, too. Find some public ground and have a great time.

I always carried a tennis ball along in case the stumps were not out to play.
Good thing about a ball is if you hit it it sets up the next shot.

Check your state regs, My state would give you a ticket for hunting out of season. We are not allowed in the woods with a weapon (gun or bow)during the closed season. We also have a law that states NO target practice on public hunting land.  Silly isn't it?????

Skitch, what part of Oklahoma are you located?  Probably need a hunting license for public hunting land.

Go where you plan on hunting, that way you can become familiar with area and get a little scouting in also.

I'm around Tulsa.  I would be fine with picking up a hunting license but would hate to get cited for shooting at a stump, or a leaf.....or even a clump of grass.  Hey....it's squirrel season!  Could I get away with it then>?

I think you would be fine with the hunting license.  Squirrel season is open now and coyote, beaver, and hogs are open year around.  One time we had some friends from out of state over and I called the Wildlife Department and they let us stump shoot without them having a hunting license with a warning to be on the up and up and not to shoot any game.
