From 15 to 20
« on: June 20, 2012, 09:08:00 PM »
I have only been  shooting recurves for a few weeks now and at 15 yards I can stack em up but at 20 I'm all over the place. Being only 5 more yards I wasn't expecting such a dramatic change in my groups.  Do I just need more practice only shooting for a few weeks or do yall think I have a problem.

You are good, just keep shooting.  It takes time and practice.

Go back to 15 (or less)and concentrate on form.  It takes practice.  Good luck

Cut the distance in half,@17 and see what happens. If you have tuning issues they get magnified the further you go. Good luck. I'm sure you'll get some better advice before long.  :D

That's good to hear. I was getting discouraged after shooting at 20 a few days. I guess I'm just trying to rush it all instead of taking my time. I just wanna be good now haha. I'll drop back to 15 and continue to practice there for a while and jus move up a yard at a time til I get to 20. Then I'll set my goal at 25 yards

I truly believe alot of it is the power of your mind.  Don't underestimate confidence.  Once I convinced myself that I could shoot at 20 - I did.  Kind of that old theory of "whether you say you can or can't...you are right."  Practice, practice, practice and keep reminding yourself that you can shoot that distance and I guarantee you can!

Thanks for the advice. Can't wait til I get off work tomorrow so I can shoot some more. I wish I had known trad archery was so fun and addicting cause I would have bought a recurve years ago

I have been going thru the same thing after not shooting my longbow for some time.  Over the weekend I was shooting great at ten yards so I moved to fifteen yards and was still shooting great.  So I moved to twenty and was still shooting great.  I wasn't able to shoot again until Tuesday night and was still excited about my performance a couple days earlier.  Tuesday I started at fifteen thinking after doing so well out to twenty I had graduated.  Well when I went to shoot at fifteen it was pretty sad.  Finally I decided to shoot at ten and immediately everything came back together.  It rained tonight but tomorrow night my plan is to start at ten and then start moving back.

When you finally figure 20 out and go to 25, you will have the same problem all over again. It is amazing how big a difference a measley 15 feet can make!

Ty - what part of MS?  Lots of trad shooters around who can help.  You're doing great, don't rush it.  Aim small, miss small.

A little extra distance can show Form Problems, which is  GOOD!!  We cant improve unless we know whats wrong!!
I just shot  AT  my target at 50 Yards, in a windy bean field, the other weekend, Oh My..... I might have hit it once by accident!!

Just make sure your arrows are matched to the bow. If they are not set up right, it doesnt matter how well you shoot, they will be all over but can be okay at a certain distance because of the way they bend back and forth as they leave the bow. If unfamilar with tuning a bow, use the search thread here. Plenty of info. Once you get the bow set up proper, then you KNOW its form.
Hopefully this is the case and you are not fighting your setup.

Fun huh? Get some judos & head into the woods for some pinecone soup! Stumpshooting will reveal another chapter of progress. Just make sure to keep it fun & relevant.

Yes very fun. I shoot about 50-100 arrows every evening. I've tried shootin a few birds an squirrels but miss by about 3 inches every single time. I finally killed a spare rooster yesterday around the house at about 15 yards. That was my first kill with a recurve haha

Ty-bone, you are just like me and many others . When we started down this path.
Shot just as many arrows.
Shooting too many in a session can be detrimental but still fun.
In looking back I'd start nice and close and work on form for a short time. Then move back and do the same. These practice arrows you consciously work on release , back tension and what ever, shows up as needing work.
Then go back close and only think about hitting the spot, let the rest be,subconscious .
Not too many shots30 to 50 for the whole thing.
Next take the judo and chase tennis balls or leafs to stumps, just look at what you want to hit and shoot it. Vary the distances . Roving is some of the best hunting practice there is.
