Signal mercury hunter?
« on: June 25, 2012, 07:23:00 PM »
So with the Texas Recurve shoot coming up this weekend and not having a recurve I had to borrow one.  My friend loaned me a beast of a bow he had stored away, a signal mercury hunter.  Anyone know anything about this bow?  Any idea what the brace height ought to be?  Cross your fingers for me that the bow or string one doesn't blow up on me this week LOL!

7 3/4 to 8 1/2 the bow was made by Ben Pearson.

So your saying the 10+ it's at currently is a bit excessive?  :) . I figured it couldn't be that different from my LB.  this should be an interesting shoot.  Thanks for the help.

Hmmm, either this string isn't long enough or I'm measuring the brace wrong.  It's to the deepest part of the grip correct?

Yup. Measure the string, and whats the bow length it should be around 4-5" shorter than the bow length if I am correct.

Well it looks like I'm going to have to pick up a new string.  This may be a crazy question but I'm sure it will not take a FF string.  What do I need to look for to make sure it's not FF material?

Im not sure on the string material. mike g makes strings give him a PM and he may be able to help on that part.I dont know what strand count would be good for that bow.

It's a 60" AMO if it's a Pearson Mercury Hunter. They shoot very nice and smooth. What weight is it? The one I like best is my 53#@28". Mine shoots best for me with a 7 3/4" brace height. It's not set up for fast  flight so a B50 is best.

It's a 60@28, the bows pretty banged up but hopefully it shoots straight.  What's the chances a bass pro wld have a B50 string?

Probably not very good, the last time I tried to by one at the Springfield BP they didn't have any. If you get ahold of Mike Horton at the Nocking Point he can have you one in a couple days. He is a sponsor here. I have a 60#@ 28 Mercury Marauder td that is the same bow basicly in a takedown and it is great. I bet you won't want to give it back after a weekend with it.

Okay.  I'm picking up a B50 string today from a local shop.  Thoughts one where to set the knocking point and silencer?  Won't have a lot of time to play around with tuning.

On my Mercury Hunter the silencers are 15" in from each end of the string and the nocking point is 9/16 above square and the arrow goes under the nock. You'll find it to be very quiet even without silencers.

I picked up the new string and as suggested I got one 4" shorter than the 60amo, so 56".  This seems to short, with virtually no twist its at 9.5 inches.  Should the string be 58"?

I thought longbows where 4"shorter and recurves where 3" shorter I could be wrong is it a endless string or flemish twist they might be able to take it and make it work

I just measured mine and it measures 57 3/4". The B50 will stretch and BH will have to be reset a couple times. String length should be 3" shorter than AMO length, but can vary alittle even though it shouldn't.
