New guy, New to Traditional Archery

Hello all.  I am new to the forum and new to recurve shooting.  I just got a Samick Sage, 50#, my draw lentgh is 28in.  I have some GT 35/55, 28.5 in, with 125 grain tips.  I am pretty sure this is over spinned.  I dont have any insert weights or larger field points but, would get them if, I knew what to get..
* Is there a "baseline" to start at? (length,weight)
* What are some "basics" I should have in my "Tool kit?) (parts,tools,etc)
I plan on putting the wheel bow up

Howdy Calvary Scout. Yes,I would bet your spine is a bit stiff. An indication of this is abrupt left flying arrows. As far as weight go's,I would try from .175 to a .225 head. I personally like to use as much weight there as I can get away with. As tools go,a brace height t-square,a set of nocking pliers,some string wax,nocks for your string should be a basic kit for you. Welcome to bow hunting without training wheels.  Best advice i can give has already been said, but ill repeat it.  Get with an experienced and knowledgeable traditional shooter and learn all that u can, and then, practice, practice, practice.

I would just shoot the bow/arrow configuration you have and not worry about it for a while.  I have a 47# bow that shoots 3555 Gold Tips with 125 grain points and shows that the spine is too weak at 28.5".  I would like to cut the shafts down more to stiffen them, but my draw length is 28" and I don't want to cut any more off the shaft.  The feathers correct for slight stiff/weak bow/arrow combinations, particularly when shooting target points.

Long-term, you will want to learn to bare-shaft tune your arrows.  If interested, get the Masters of the Bare Bow series of DVD's, which are invaluable for learning to shoot the trad bow.  There is a section, I believe in MBB 2, where Ken Beck of Black Widow discusses bare shaft tuning.  That will get you off to a good start.

I am shooting arrows just like that, but with a 175 grain head. My draw is shorter and a couple pounds lighter than yours, so you should be in the ball park. You might  want to try getting some heavier heads. Is there someone or a shop nearby that knows a little trad? I could send you a few heads.

That being said, I agree that you should go ahead and shoot what arrows you have, maybe with new points. It is easy to get into tuning tangles and endless fussing over equipment. But it will distract you from what you should be doing, which is developing proper form. If you don't do that first, you will not be able to tell whether a problem is your bow, your arrow, the rotation of the Earth, or you.

You never told us what made you think that your arrows were too stiff. As long as they are not slapping the heck out of your riser, they will let you do your ground work. If they fly left, your brain will adjust for it. Keep at it, and keep the questions coming!
