How many arrows 4 trip?
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:24:00 AM »
So how many arrows do you take on a hunting trip? Just for the sake of arguement lets say backcountry hunting, carbon arrows.  I'm currently thinking 4 is plenty, but would love to hear what others think.

I'm in the mountains for 2 1/2 weeks, we can drive to where our camp will be, and my arrow case holds a dozen - so I take 12.  We shoot every day in camp and I also have a couple blunts along.  I've never had two shots at the same elk.  On a daily basis I take 3-4 broadheads and a blunt.

How long are you gonna be out?  Are you talking a pack in, base camp several day trip or just a one day in and out?  For day trips i take 4 broadheads plus a blunt. For a several day hunt, i will take more.

I live on Guam and travel to Texas most years to hunt for a month, I take two doz arrows with me, rather have too many than not enough.

1 per animal. Then I factor is possible misses, small game heads, and follow up shots. Let's see....carry the 1 and....... By my calculation for a week long back country trip I would only need 273 arrows.  :smileystooges:

Last year I went to Colorado for Elk....we camped out of the truck. I carried 4 arrows with broadheads and 2 judos while hunting. I had a PVC tube with a dozen more back at camp......LOL, I had way more than I needed.........   :dunno:

4 probably is plenty for hunting, but I would add a couple of extras for stumpshooting. You could always press them into service with a broadhead if need be.  I'd also pack 2 or 3 extra broadheads as my backup plan.

Thinking 8-10 days, at least 6 miles back from the truck.

Are you talking Bow quiver or side/back quiver? I'm a bow quiver guy so probably 4 broadhead arrows and piggy backer with a blunt. Maybe a small container with a broadhead and and blunt. Side quiver I would probably have 4-5 broadheads and 2 blunts with no backup container.

6 with a couple of blunts or judos.......you could always take a couple extra with piggy backers and then just leave them in camp while hunting, but they would be there if you needed them.

Well if on day one you take a fall and wipe out your quiver full of arrows(did it on a mule deer hunt), you will be hard pressed to walk back to the truck for 4 more.

I take a quiver load and a refill when packing in.

Six with broadheads and two with blunts should be fine. I only carry 4 in my limb bolt quiver when hunting.

I load my bow quiver and keep a dozen back at camp-never used more than a few per trip but always glad to have had too many. Throw in a couple of blunts or Judo's too.

You owe it to the game to make sure you have enough for an initial (hopefully only shot), and any follow up shots that you may need, don't forget any misses.  If you are confortable with four then four it is.  I take 4 hunting arrows and some times two extra shafts and broadheads not made up but in my back pack, and a couple of the same at base camp. I like to take one blunt as well ussually leaving in base camp unless bird season is open.  (base camp is sometimes only my  truck or jump off point)

I leave home with a dozen, pack in 6 with me, leave the rest in the truck for emergency.

Like Wingnut said, one ooops..oh $hit, can wipe out a quiver full of arrows.

When hunting OOS, I bring 12.

3 have BHs, 3 have field points for camp practice and 2 wear blunts. 4 are spares in case I miss too many grouse!  I also have three SHARP BHs extra in a box for backup.

Around home, 3 BHs and 2 blunts on a hunt.

But I'm Mr. Worry.  Never emptied the quiver at home or away.

Can't have too much ammo... well, maybe.
My bow quiver holds 5, 3 BHeads and 2 Sm Game heads with a hard 3" tube of 7 more for a total of 12. I was always pretty good at math! 3 more Bheads and rest sm. game heads
I expect the tube to remain closed. Obviously, I worry that I'll have to open it.

I would certainly take a lot more than I feel like I would actually need. You never know how many could be lost or broken. You can always leave the extras in camp if you don't want to lug all of them in the bush. Better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.
