Arrow recipe for extreme FOC!!!!
« on: July 03, 2012, 08:13:00 AM »
I have been thinking about try some of the 300+ grain broadheads.  I was wondering if any of you guys would share your arrow recipe for lets say 400+ grains up front on a carbon arrow.  I shoot 55# at my 27" draw with a Hoyt Buffalo.  Thanks.

Carbon express 250 would probably do well for you, or a 500 spine arrow of whatever make.  I shoot the CE 250 out of a 53# ACS with 300 up front but I leave them 29" long for my 27 1/2"-28" drawlength. So if you use 350-400 and cut to 28" or 27" you should be in the ballpark.

I would think at 29" you would be good with 400 spine and 100 grain brass insert. I use MFX Classic 400's , 100 grain brass inserts and will be using 200 grain VPA heads.

I have a much longer draw and need to leave my arrows at least 30.5 so I can't help you much with specific shaft recommendations. I definitely vote for the 100gr insert , since if the 300's turn out a bit too much, you can always drop back to 200+ without wasting the shaft.

I'll second the 250 recommendation, you may need to go down to 300g up front but start with a 100g brass insert and work from there.
If your shooting stinks, work with a Form master.  It'll bring back your A game.

GT trad 75-95 cut to 28" 100 gr. brass 300gr head 26.5% FOC

May need to build out strike plate a bit though.

Same dynamic spine as as the 250 with only 300 up front.

I have not run any numbers but judging from what I shoot off my 50# bow, I would think this would be the place to start.

My 50 and 55# moab's will shoot a 29" gt 55/75 with a 100gr brass insert and 200-250gr points.....for a total of 300-350 up front and 650gr+ arrow weight and 25+% FOC.

Just wanna throw in some AD trads. To me, being tapered, they're built for it.  The hammerheads have a built in collar for even more strength and top loading.  Plus they tune easy

Check ouy Victory HV shafts They are the lowest weight to spine shafts I have found. I shoot the HV 350 they are 6.7 gpi at a 350spine, Total weight of a 29" shaft is around 194grs which leaves plenty of room to make a EFOC arrow without it weighing to much. I top them with a 125gr snuffer with 125gr steel insert for a total of 250grs. Inside dia. of the HV shafts are 245 so you could easily add a 50 or 100gr insert. Total weight of my shafts with nock fletching rap aluminum insert is app 525grs with a foc of app 25%.

If you want EXTREME FOC, the only way is to go with ultra light weight shafts, this lets you put all your weight up front to get the high FOC.  Two of the best shafts for this is the Gold Tip Velocity (7.4 gpi 400 shaft) or the Victory High Velocity V3 (6.4 gpi 350 Shaft) I have two dozen of the Victory HV -350 fletched up and ready for my Africa trip next month, heres the set up. Arrows 30.5" long 650 gr. 100gr. brass insert, 175 gr. Aboyer Heads with 125 gr. steel inserts, total 400 gr. up front, shooting 60", 54 Lb.at my 29.5" draw, Morrison Max 2 ILF 180 fps, FOC 30+  Momentium 50 slug pounds. I have been planing this trip for two years and have tried about every shaft out there for performance, I'm satisfied with these results.  RW

I have found that even though 390g were up front, "tuning" did not require going up past, or even too .400 spine on my before center cut 56# longbow. When I actually shot a few large hogs, with those 700g EFOC arrows, and still could not get past the shield or scapulas, I abandoned the idea as not for me. Good Luck
Set-up was, 190g Grizzlys that were KME Sharpened, 100g BH adaptors, 100g brass inserts, Carbon Express Heritage shafts, 27" draw from 55# longbow, "planing method" tuned out to 35yds which was point on so that part was easy. What a nightmare that was, very disappointed in the performance of those "logs."  Brings to mind the word pincushion. I wouldn't bother with them.

Im shooting full lenght beman 340s with 100 gr brass insert. my broadheads are 200 grain grizzlys with 125 grain steel insert. 425 grain total up front. Im shooting 60lb at my draw.
With your draw and poundage you should be able to start off with some full length 400 spined arrows and start tuning with the upfront weight you want.

VictoryHV Vforce350 (6.7 gpi)
Length- ~28.25”
100 insert
300 gn point
Total Weight ~606 (~11.0 gpp)
Ultra-EFOC ~31.7%

Tunes extremely well for me out of a high performance 51@28 bow w/1/8" past center shelf and 8 strand SBD string….. Extremely hard on targets……
Note: My shafts are 28.5".

Thanks guys.  Something I don't understand though is you guys that can load up a .400 spine arrow with a 55# bow.  Right now the only way I can get 400's to tune is with a 100 grain brass insert and a 100 grain head.  I go much past a 150 grain tip and the arrow comes out of the bow plum sideways.

***From my experience***

-Arrows have tuned well at ~2#s underspined

-Have achieved even better flight at ~15#s underspined

-Have achieved possibly the best flight at ~27-28#'s underspined.

Have encountered poor and erratic flight in between and over.

Note: A 400 spine…100 gn insert…250 gn pt.…28” arrow may get you close. There are many contributing variables so take your time to evaluate prior before trimming shafts.

KINETIC ENERGY    HUNTING USAGE
25 ft. lbs.    Small Game
25-41 ft. lbs.    Medium Game (Deer, Antelope)
42-65 ft. lbs.    Large Game (Elk, Black Bear, Boar)
65 ft. lbs.    Big Game (Cape Buffalo, Grizzly)

Easton Tech Support :I personally recommend going with something between 425-500 grains along with an 11-18% FOC.  If you are between those ranges you will have a great arrow for big game.  Just make sure that if you are using a lot of point weight on a 400 spine that you don’t make it too weak for your set up.
