White Oak for Longbow Riser...
« on: July 04, 2012, 02:55:00 PM »
Anyone have a picture of American White Oak in a hill style american longbow riser? Thoughts?

I know it would be pretty plain jane, but as far as the wood itself goes, any negatives?

If my bowyer can't find a good source for the Yew I have ordered, I'm thinking about stained American Elm cores with a matching stained White Oak riser as a back-up plan. Pure business.

I would use something more dense for the riser. But I love yew limbs!

I have not used the white oak before but it seems it should work. Very heavy and strong.
I have a log segment in my shop for 3-4 years now,it is a wild looking crotch piece. I just worked a part of it down to smaller dim. to get it out of my way. Now I have some blocks drying down on the wood shelf. It is pretty wild looking.
I have intentions of putting it in an American longbow riser.

I don't know anything about using it in risers, but if you can find it, white oak burl is just amazing.  Very hard and dense too.

Check out the Omega longbows.  Kegan uses red and white oak for most of his risers.   http://omegalongbows.webs.com/gallery.htm

I'm not a bowyer, but white oak is quite dense and should work really well.

When I built a couple Bingham's project bows, I inquired with Bingham's about using oak in the riser.  They did not hesitate when they said they don't recommend it.  I never asked why, just took them at their word.  That's about all I have to add to the subject.
