Beginner needing broadhead advice and recommendations.
« on: July 04, 2012, 10:07:00 PM »
I'm relatively new to traditional archery and am trying to set up my equipment.

I'm shooting a 30" arrow out of a recurve (47-48# @ my draw).

Could you guys please recommend a good 125grain broadhead for me?

I'd like it forgiving in flight and  easy to sharpen.

Could you also tell me what's the best tool to sharpen it with?

Lastly, where's a good place to buy them from?

Thanks.

Zwickey Eskimo comes to mind.

I use a file and go lightly for the last few strokes.

Need to know if you are looking for a glue on or screw in broadhead.   Magnus stingers are a good screw in style, lots of great glue ons available.  I always start my search at Braveheart or the Nocking Point, both sponsors here.

Magnus Stingers are great heads.  I shoot them on GT 3555 arrows and they fly great out of my 45# bow.  I use an AccuSharp to get mine sharp after shooting them into targets.

Great advise given above from the gang as always. My two cents since I am a 3 blade guy. Get you some Wensel Woodsman's either the standards or the newer elites. If you buy the elites they will last forever if not lost in the dirt after a pass thru !!! Duck soup to sharpen them by laying two blades down on a file at a time. Drag them backwards on a good 10" nicholson or swiss made mill bastard file, then finish dragging them on thick leather or inside of a cereal box. After that you best be careful cause they will be SCARY sharp. Touch ups are a breeze too. Plenty of sponsors here that have these heads as well as the classifieds. JMHO

If you want a 2 blade than I would go with a Magnus stinger 125 grain 2 blade. As far as multiblade heads go just get some Woodsman Elite 125 grain heads they are with out a doubt one of the best multiblade heads on the market right now.

I would go with either an ACE 100 plus insert or a MUZZY PHANTOM 125. Both very good blades and can be sharpened with a file or a carbide sharpener. I carry both in stock.

For ease of sharpening, go with a 2 blade head, with a straight edge, none of this convex or concave business.  I won't tell you one brand over another, because they are all pretty good and can all bring down your prey.  To insure good flight go with a large fletch (5" or 5.5") with a good helix.  NoCams sharpening advice is good, whatever head you pick, get it really sharp.

Yep..do kinda need to know if you're looking for a screw on or a glue on head.
Also, it's important to know what type of game you're after. For deer you can use about anything, for elk, bear, or bigger things you might want a smaller cut head.

Straight edged 2 blades are generally easier to sharpen with a file.

3 blades are really pretty easy too.
With 3 blades you don't need to worry about keeping a consistent angle. I have some instructions for sharpening 3 blades that I got from a pro that I'll be happy to email you if you want....made sharpening 3 blades a breeze for me.

I like zwickeys for cost and effectiveness....but I can't really recommend them to someone worried about their sharpening skills. They need quite a bit more work out of the package to get sharp.

Learning to sharpen by hand with a file and stones is a REALLY good skill to learn.

..but that aside..an $8 accusharp tool is super easy to use and works very well on double bevel 2 blades...and it doesn't matter if the blades have a curve to them or not.

There's no reason to break the bank..
Eclipse heads come with a nice factory grind.

Tuskers are pretty good heads that don't have the tri lam tip that can add a little frustration to a beginner sharpener.

I truly can't think of an easier combination than a tusker head sharpened with a accusharp.
Here's an A+ place to get them   http://www.braveheartarchery.us/tusker_broadheads.htm

Hope it helps.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I'm looking for simple and easy.

I'll probably try the 2 blade Magnus Stingers with an Accusharp.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything better than either 125gr Magnus Stingers or 125gr Steelforce Phats. I shoot high 30's-low 40's and get passthru's on deer with both.

Especially if "new" and you want something that's razor sharp right from the package.

The Steelforce Phathead is the most industructable head made, in my opinion, with the main blade coming in at .080 thickness.

3 Rivers carries both heads, although it looks like they may be out of stock on the Stingers at the moment.

The magnus 2 blade 125's are the sharpest best flying broadheads that I have used in that weight.  They are simple to sharpen and hold an edge pretty well although I always tune mine up before heading to the woods.  My opinion you should never shoot a broadhead that you cannot shave with.  I never have hair on my left forearm during the season... haha
