I need bow ideas!
« on: July 07, 2012, 11:42:00 PM »
Due to a recent change in shooting style and softening of my stubborness, I have come to realize my current bow is just a bit too much for me to shoot dead on everytime. I'm piddling with the idea of getting a new bow but I'm a bit picky on such things so here's the criteria.
Tillered for three under.

Draw weight something like 53@28 so it will be around 52 or so at my draw.

58 or so inches long to accommodate my near verticle bow positioning.

Good quality no frills bow but still custom.

I don't have a preference on whether  it's a recurve or longbow.

Who do I need to look to to build me this bow?
Thanks guys

If you have a price point in mind, I'd add that.  Lots of good bows fit your criteria....some are $300 and some are $1300

The answer may be as simple as a lite set of limbs for your current riser.

I have two bows from Lewis Hollow Archery, and really like them. One is a take down recurve and the other is a one piece recurve. Call Chris Sparks and he will talk with you and make sure you get what you want, and he is pretty cheap compared to others. He starts at $650.

I forgot to include a few things like always haha.

1. I want to stay with a takedown if possible but I dont have an issue with a one piece.

2. a healthy sized sight window if that makes sense.

You know, there's nothing wrong with dropping down to a 45# or even less, if you need to. That is more than enough to kill a hog or a deer. Lighter will be better when you're working on your form. There is always a market for bows in that range, so you really won't be out any money, if you decide to sell it later on.

I'm in love with my 58" recurve from St Joe River bows.  It's very smooth and built for hunting.  Fully custom, but fits me perfectly as I'm likewise not looking for a lot of frivolous frills...I like solid performance and built to work.  That's what I got.

Honestly, too many good bows to list. What I DO have to say....is congrats! And welcome to the world of accuracy! Now that you've accepted you are overbowed, your shooting is going to drop your jaw at a proper weight! You have just overcome one of the biggest obstacles in trad archery.

If I were going to break away from my Black Widow bows, I'd look into Bigfoot, Eagle Wing, or Acadian Woods.  Good bows, very well made, great reputations.  And from what I hear, Bigfoot and Eagle Wing are very custom, but not hugely expensive.
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.

How about an ILF setup...  it lends itself to your vertical shooting style and with a 4 to 5#s of weight adjustment you can dial in your optimum weight?

There are a bunch of sponsors here that make some fine ILF equipment. I think Bob Morrison hunts with his ILF set up? Dryad, Zipper, Black Creek are all sponsors here and make fine bows...

Good luck
