2 new weapons blooded
« on: July 09, 2012, 07:12:00 PM »
was shooting my new bamabow this morning, when i heard my german shorthair sally barking bayed.

had 4 broadheads in the backquiver and my new bowie, so took off straightaway.

was hoping hogs, but it was just a treed raccoon.  they are hard on our quail, though.

hated to risk a broadhead sent skyward, so knocked it out of the tree with a blunt.  it hit the ground running, with sally-girl hot on it.

treed again.  this time i did what i should have the 1st time, and sent a broadhead.  i learned to shortdraw a broadhead so as to keep the arrow in game many years ago on grouse in montana.

did it just right, at maybe 20 feet.  bleeding 'coon fell from tree with a foot of arrow sticking out each side, but running no more.  full of fight!

by this time, my 12 year old dachshund samson (a mighty hunter in his day, but fading), caught up.

he's still a pure killer.  just DOVE on that 'coon!  it outweighed him double, i reckon.

couldn't get a clear shot, so drew my new 10" laclair bowie, moved in, and got a clear neck chop in.  that did it, but i chopped again to be sure.

dogs were thrilled.  they worried the carcass for a half-hour.  they're good dogs.

i just love dogs, bows, and knives...

Excellent! Glad to hear that I'm not the only owner of Shorthairs that double as coondogs!

thanks, all.

yeah, most people think shorthairs are just pointers, but they were bred to do everything--even track wounded game.

sally hunts grasshoppers and lizards in her spare time.

i'm trying to break her of horny-toads, though.  i've got a soft spot for them.

she doesn't kill them on purpose--she just plays with them till they're dead.

Was the broadhead sticking out of the raccoon when the dog attacked it?

yes, but fortunately it was angled into the dirt.

i'm rethinking the wisdom of short-drawing on animals that may fight the dogs, though.

Glad you are putting a dent into the coon population.  Dang things are putting a hurting on our chickens, not to mention our peach trees.  Gonna be sticking some myself, soon.

dogs need kills.  the last 2 hogs they bayed, i missed 25 yard shots.

they expect me to do my part, and have a right to.

they were all over me and each other last evening.

doggie high-5s all around.

they're...no, WE'RE...proud as punch of each other.
