nock fix wood arrows
« on: July 12, 2012, 01:50:00 PM »
i seem to damage the nock taper when trying to remove a broken nock, i only have the pencil sharpener type taper tool so it isnt possible to re-taper without trashing the fletching and having to re-do the whole arrow. is there a simple method of simply replacing a broken nock? Thanks  Scott

Can you just smooth out the taper with sand paper?

Try putting the nock in boiling water for a few seconds or heat with hair dryer.

I use duco for gluing my nocks to wood.
Never ever had a problem with the glue. sticks good and works well.

To get them off easily when I bust one I heat up the remaining nock with a lighter.
Just enough to soften it..not start it on fire.

Then you can take a thin sharp blade..my jack knife works well and so do exactos.. and just slit the nock lengthways. try not to cut the shaft of course. It cuts really easy when it's soft.

The nock stays soft for just long enough to peel it off from around the shaft starting from the slit.

A little steel wool readies the taper for the next nock.

I use a razor knife and cut away at the plastic only till I see wood then work on the other side till I see wood. I keep doing this till I get close to the end of the taper then snap off the old nock with pliers. It's kinda like whittling. Take a little off at a time. Only takes a few seconds per shaft once you get the hang of it.

I do the heat/ match thing and twist the nock with pliers.

Don't try fixing a nock.
That's just asking for trouble man.

Cheap and easy to replace once you know how.

I may be doing it wrong but I melt mine(usually with a lighter) until they are a big plastic blob and let them cool a little, just enough that they feel rubbery and not like hard plastic then run a razor knife up opposite sides of the nock, then I let them finish cooling and twist/pull the plastic off with pliers.I've had good luck doing this so far.

I use basically superglue for nocks, the archery kind.  Wen broken, I hold the shaft nock down on a cutting board and use an exacto knife, or knife w/ a goo point and sharp, and just cut down one time or 2 in the same spot, twist gently w/ pliers and they pop off. That glue is brittle so they come off easily when I want them to. I rarely have them fall off though, unless I hit something HARD and usually more than once.

Propane torch and then a pair of pliers to just twist the soft nock off.

Just run the hot water faucet and hold just the nock under untill you can pull it off with pliers. It only takes a few seconds.

As others have said....a couple of seconds with a lighter and they twist right off with pliers.  Lightly hand sand the nock taper, glue on new nock and you're good to go.
