broadhead sharpening using grinders and such

i am not as good on stones as i'd like to be after sharpening heads for 30 yrears lol

has anyone used the various grinder stones or sanding belts that are available out there for two blade heads i am tired of stones and files and just don't have time to get an edge as sharp as it needs to be for hunting thanks in advance!

will a fine grit sander belt or fine grit grinding wheel be ok for heads or do i need a special stone or belt?

You could try paper wheels.

There was an article in a recent issue of "Woodcarving Illustrated" where a stationary belt sander (1" or 2" belt) was used to sharpen carving knives.  It worked for them !!

I have one of those low rpm wet wheel grinders from Harbor Freight.  Comes with a guide you can adjust.  I'd get the block to condition the stone wheel though to keep the stone consistent.  I've used it quite a bit.  About 100$.  I sharpen all kinds of stuff on it.  It has a leather wheel too for stropping.  Works good.

DO NOT try to sharpen 3 blade heads on a paper wheel ! It will get real ugly real quick.

I have found pretty much all the methods work from bastard file to expensive doodad. Decide what you are going to use then practice and practice some more. And you might as well learn to sharpen with a file........in the field that's the preferred method anyway.

I love the paper wheels. Period! It will determine that you use 2 blade heads though, but for the precision edge you get in a matter of 60 seconds or less, I can stick with them because it produces a great edge time after time after time.

What's a paper wheel?   Is it for a high speed grinder?

I often use my Rigid Oscillating Belt Sander(4x24).
Change out the belt sander for the spindle sander and PRESTO a sharpener for Simmons heads.

That sharpening system that Jim has is a paper wheel system. There are two parts, a grinding wheel and a polishing wheel. They attach to a standard wheel grinder. It will get a two blade head scalpel sharp. I can do 6 broadheads in less time than it takes to do one with a stone. A file is pretty quick, but it won't give you the polished edge the paper wheel will.

Like Flinttim said, though, you can't use a 3 blade head on it.
