black bear triathlon
« on: July 28, 2012, 07:00:00 PM »
This was a fun trip. With work and weather I only got out once in May.  I say it's a triathlon as I went by mt bike, boat, and hiking.  Just a quick pictorial, not much of a story.
.
Crossing a snow slide on the way in with the bike.
.

.

Went as far as I could with the bike, stashing it now then continuing on by foot with the pack.

Time to put the bow and arrows back together after the bike ride in.  Felt like the Man with the Golden Gun from the James Bond movie.
.

.
And there's our quarry !  Been thinking about this all winter.  Wish he was lower, but he coulda been higher.

Now for the boat part.  A friend has a boat stashed in here.  His sons are all husky buffaloes, I think that best explains how the boat got in here.
.

.
Just an itty-bitty boat, but I was happy for it.  No pictures while I'm in it, had my hands full with the wind/waves and current.

Here's a pic on the way up, after 45 minutes in the boat.  The forget-me-nots were incredible.
.

.
And another.  Pretty place.  That's a good-sized glacier at the back-right.

As you can see in the pics there was dead grass everywhere so very noisy walking.  Didn't even get close to the bear I was after.  Couple hours later, on the way down, I spotted a better one and tried sneaking on him.  It was terrible conditions (loud walking, bad wind, had to move from cover).  Did get ~50 yards from him, but then I think he heard, smelled, AND saw me !  Here he is, no getting an arrow thru that brush either.
.

.
.
Good times.

Then I reversed modes of transportation and headed back out.  Seems like forever ago but it was just this May.

Tim, what general part of the state is that in?  As a former Alaskan of 20+ years, I'm curious!  Sure do miss it up there.
