Hello
« on: August 02, 2012, 01:40:00 AM »
I'm new to the forum. I used to shoot an old Bear recurve bow. I think it was a Black Bear 58" 50#. Anyway I've been looking into getting back into archery for a while and I'm looking for advise from folks that are current on bows and the quality of production bows available today. I'm currently considering a Bear grizzly or going to a longbow such as the Bear Montana. Thanks in advance for any input that you may care to give.

Welcome Ruger.     :campfire:

You will get lots of opinions----
I hunt with longbows (but there are four recurves on my racks).  Find some shooters in your area, pick their brains, try out some bows of both kinds, and take your pick.   Enjoy !

Welcome!  Find you an old Black Bear for $100 and go have a blast with it!

It will shoot just as well today as it did 40 years ago.

Lots of opinions on bows here.  I do recommend going used.  You will save a bunch and can try different bows for less risk.

Let me echo the welcome and let me also echo to try used first. Older Bears are great shooters. Used but quality Grizzlys are out there for a fair price.

Take a look at the classifieds here. Ask lots of questions of the seller. Look at the seller's posting history here on TradGang. And get lots of pics of any bow you're about to buy. (tips, riser, belly, back, fades, etc)

I own an old Super Grizzly and a new Super Mag 48. The older bow is a better bow in my opinion. The Super Mag is OK, but the Grayling bow finish is better in my opinion.

Just an example: my daughter bought her boyfriend a 45# Bear Grizzly, Grayling edition, probably from the early 70s, for $100 off craig's list.  It was in near new condition. Buy smart and enjoy your return to archery.

No better place to learn, and no better people to learn from.  See if you can find a local traditional club.  Go to a shoot.  Most guys will let you try their bows.  They love them almost as much as their wives (more in some cases), but are much more willing to share.  Then you can see what you like for a grip, draw weight and style, recurve or longbow.  Then shop used.  A lot of great bows for sale.  Lots of great bowyers to choose from.  Best of all times to be in starting back down the path.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.
