I've always kept very detailed notes of every big game animal I've taken. The last the last time I crunched the numbers my average shot distance was between 14 and 15 yards.

David,

Cool to see a post from someone from Crozet.  I went to Crozet Elementary many moons ago.  I'm a trad newbie - just picked up my first recurve this past December (now have 4 recurves and 4 longbows).  No trad kills, yet.  But I feel good about this season.

Experience with training wheel bow this past season (shot 5 deer with bow) was an average of 18 yds.

Welcome to the old school way!

The last deer I shot was at 6 feet.  The average shot is about 14 yds (primarily hogs).

The last 20 some deer have been between 18 and 30 yards, it is easier for me as a ground hunter to have a bit of a distance from the trail.

Practice from 20 yards back to 5 in every conceivable shooting contortion and you will be
good to go !

Over 44 traditional deer kills, my average distance is 12.48 yards.  Three long shots of 35, 30, and 25 really hurt my average.  The rest were 20 and under.  I've killed 24 at 10 yards or less.

I am sooooo happy to see the number of posts that say 12 yards is their average shot.  Since I have recently transitioned to trad, I have been kicking myself for my inability to do what I had been doing with a sighted compound.  I think I can hunt this year, as long as I discipline myself to keep it close.

Most of the time 5 to 10 steps from tree. I killed two last season about 18 steps, but that's not the norm for me.

12-15 yds average, longest 27 yds.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Ten yards or less, no need to shoot them any farther if you don't have to. I've missed one or two at ten because I don't practice that close enough.
