Which Bow do you think is the quietest?
« on: January 17, 2007, 02:37:00 AM »
I always like to make fun of my friend's wheel bow because it sounds like artillery going off compared to my recurve.  The other day I shot with a longbowman and was surprised at how quiet his bow was compared to mine.

It got me thinking, what is the quietest bow you guys have had the pleasure to shoot?

the bow that has the best design and is properly tuned(brace height, arrow weight and spine, silencer placement)and is being shot with the best form/release will win out most time,,,and i think that the longbows will be an even more likely candidate. my CX is deafly quiet.

A longbow of some sort will be the quietest. To be honest some of the newer compounds if set up right will be as quiet as most trad bows.Get rid of the release and metal rest and it is uncanny how quiet some of them can be.

My friend Jose' and I shot a Northern Mist longbow at Compton's this year and it made very little noise....it had no string silencers or anything.
Is it too late to be what I could have been?

A well tuned & properly tillered ELB takes some beating, I think. It never ceases to amaze me at shoots, just how quiet an ELB is compared to everything else. They're never silenced & only produce a quiet 'click' of the arrow passing the riser. I'm sure with a soft arrow pass fitted, as opposed to a horn or hardwood pass, an ELB would be silent.

I dont know if it proves anything but, in the summer deer come out in the field 150yds from where I usually shoot in the evenings. I've noticed several times that everytime a recurve or LB is shot with a cabon or an aluminum arrow that the deer pop there heads up. But with wood arrows they never flinch. That being said I still hunt with carbon. Also to test one bows noise level against the other, all things should be equal same type arrow, string, silencer. poundage...ect.

Both my Ballistiks are very quiet even with lighter arrows and no silencers.

I also have an older Bob Lee Signature (91) that is very quiet with no silencers and a 450+ string.

A selfbow will be the quietest.  Second to that will be a "D" shaped longbow, ala Howard Hill, Robertson, Dwyer, you get the picture.  Some recurves are pretty dang quiet as well.  I would have to say the Morrisons that I have shot were probably the quietest recurves.

My Jay St Charles longbow was the quietest (it was damned quiet!) and now my Morrison Shawnee with Arapaho limbs and a 450+ string made by Rod Jenkins has completely taken over that spot. Imagine that-a recurve with a modern non-stretch string at that!

well here's my 2 cents: MY chapparal kaibab was quiet as a church mouse my Fedora xcellerator also very quiet it still has a f.f. string on it with cat whiskers but when I received my Hornes brushbow it had a FAST FLIGHT string no silencers and it was quiet, THEN I put on a B-50 string and cat whiskers FORGETTABOUTIT the only way I know I shot is because I have one less arrow in my quiver!

Davids self bow is mighty quiet. I myself am shooting a Cherokee by Roy Hall, moderate R/D and it is the quietest bow I have ever shot, although I have a Harold Couch LB that my wife thinks is quieter. Shawn

I was kinda surprised at a 3D last yr shootin with the wheel guys when this fella had a wheel bow as quiet as my LB which is pretty quiet typical of LB's in genral.

I guess it depends on how ya set them up,they can all be darn quiet even the rattle traps that we don,t shoot around here
Shoot straight and have FUN!!
