#2 in the cooler
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:59:00 PM »
Just finished putting the second deer in the cooler. Did it right this time( compared to last weeks spine shot) and got a complete pass through, liver and one lung due to the quartering away angle. Deer hopped, trotted off about 20 feet, looked back, walked another 30 feet and laid down and started nibbling on palmetto berries. In less than 5 minutes she just laid her head down and died. Thats how its done. Absolutely no struggle. She just went out.
Ironically, this is the same deer I untangled from the a field wire fence Thursday night. She was a fawn of this year and I don't think she weighed 50 pounds. But she will cook up good and tender!
My management "plan" is to take 1 buck, 1 mature doe and 1 fawn. If I get a big buck in range I might modify that a little but if not, Its been a good season already.

Same as last year. 2 deer 2  months before my season even opens. You are killin me.

Congrats and I know your bow. Only reason I didn't buy it was cause it broke too many arrows lol.

Congrats again.

Think that was 2 years ago Charlie. I killed 2 does in the first 2 weeks. Last year I missed several deer during bow season. Some of them more than once!
This year I hosted a Rod Jenkins clinic in April, did the drills and the bridge and then got my butt up in a tree stand to practice. A LOT. The last month I've shot close to 50 arrows a night out of a stand and its paying off.

This Kanati is one sweet little bow for sure! Its the first one piece bow that I've really gotten along with. The grip is just right. Its smooth and fast and does the job, if I do my part.

Good job!

I have a buddy that calls those, "suitcase deer."  Just tie the feet together, pick up the rope as a handle, and walk out of the woods with it!    :goldtooth:

Congrats! Just curious what the thought process behind the management plan is? What made you decide to shoot 1 buck, 1 doe and 1 Fawn?

Thanks guys,
As far as a management plan. I'm trying to kind of spread the takes each year out through the different age/sex brackets. This way, I hope to be able to take 2 or 3 deer a year with minimal impact to the herd in its entirety.I don't have a clue as to if its a sound plan but in the 4 seasons I've been hunting this 20 acres(that we also live on) I am seeing a definite increase in the numbers of deer. I surely not a trophy hunter by any means. I'm just filling the freezer to feed me and my wife.
