Road over to Fort Stewart this Morning for a short hunt.Rained last night and I was hoping to find fresh sign for a good start and maybe scout some white oaks for the up coming deer season. Pulled into my honey hole and eased in the bottoms. Humid is to kind of a word for how it felt and I new I was in for a short trip after the first hour because my shirt was soaked down from sweat.
I eased around a bit and found one white oak loaded with acorns in a narrow drain that I could shoot all the way across meaning if I climbed here during deer season if one came through he would not be out of range. A sweet looking set-up . Even better when I found two sets of fresh deer tracks that had been through since the rain.
I herd some noise and spotted a hardshell possum...
I followed him a bit thinking about cracking him with a judo when he stuck his head in a tree after termites. I put the sneak on him so close even my Buddy Chris could hit this one..lol
I put my foot on his tail and he just backed out of the stump and walked away looking back. I could not shoot such a unwary critter so I eased on ..
After a mile or so loop and no pork I went across a cow oak flat and as I started between two trees I looked down just in time to dodge a strike from a Timber rattler that would have been bad. He fully lunged about 1/2 to 3/4 his body length and missed me by inches. Almost gave me a bad case of the scours. Time to go home after that. Here is a pic and a short vid of some swamp music.RC
