Bow building wood ?
« on: August 07, 2007, 02:35:00 PM »
Having zero knowledge on bowbuilding, I guess I'd better ask...wondering how black walnut, cherry, hickory are for bowbuilding.  Now, I have neither the inclination nor the time to build a bow but I deal in an awful lot of the above woods mainly straight from the sawmills.  I get it roughsawn between 1 and 1-1/2 inches thick....but on a load I can tell them to cut/throw on some thicker sticks.  It's all generally dried (kiln).  So I'm curious if these are usable, and if anyone is looking for some to play with.  Probably be another month or so before I get another coupla thousand board foot, but didn't want to wait until the last minute.
Thanks for any info !

For the short answer....yes, all these woods can make a bow...Hickory being by far the best of the choices given.

The others work well with backings. I wish I could take some off your hands.

Why couldn't you take some off my hands?  I need check into this further, but if a few folks would like some of this I'd be happy to ship off a few boxes.  Like I said, it'll be a bit of time with everything that's going on right now.  That's why I'm trying to gather info on the woods and minimum thicknesses, etc.  Frankly, I luv the look of the black walnut...just not sure of it's quality for bows.

Thunder,

I thinks a lot of people would be happy to have a chance of scoring some of those woods.

Not having a lot of experience, I wouldn't care to comment on the "best" sizes of sticks to grab, but there are many experienced self bow builders here who would know what would be best.

Thanks for making the offer to all.

You could send me some hickory, please!!!  I am happy to take some off your hands.  I just built a bow out of it and love working with it.

Straight grain, 6 ft long and 2 inches wide or thick X ????

The blanks I use are 4/4 by 2 inches wide.

Thunder I'd be interested in walnut and hickory. 2 inch width works great giving working room to get 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" wide limbs. Length can be 32" to 36" and thickness can be anything over 1/4". Let me know what you need cash wise.

I'd be interested in all three kinds, especially hickory in 6'long 2" wide and 1 1/2" thick. Shipping might be kinda high on six foot boards though.

OK, seems to be some genuine interest then.  As I get closer to my next load, I'll start a new thread for it.  I'll talk to the mills and see what I can get for an assortment, heavy on the hickory....walnut's a sure thing.  I'll see if I can hook up enough for 15 or so folks.  Maybe if I send enough wood to enough folks, we'll see one or two nice kid's bows up on next year's St. Jude's auction, eh ?   :bigsmyl:
Kenny, sweet lookin' work there !
Benbow...it's on me, so no worries.

I would be willing to guarantee a couple hickory bows for the auction next year.  Maybe a hunting bow and a kids bow.

Some smaller pieces of walnut would be useful in the handles as well.

Thunder,

Where in NE ohio are you? I live in Warren but travel to ashtabula county and mahoning county regularly for buissness. I am thinking about learning how to build bows and would love some nice wood to work with

Thanks

Thank you
