Last week I saw a doe and two yearlings. No shots offerred but none asked. Today I saw two little antlerless - either Ma stayed in the cover or she was elsewhere (Neighbor's freezer?).
Just at sunset I heard shuffling and a lovely eight-point rubbed my nose in it. He came in straight, passed DIRECTLY under my feet and continued off in a straight line. I have been burned with straight-down angle shots and let him pass . . . and I guess I'm happy with that. It was a joy to see a good buck but I am second-guessing and rewinding that mental tape repeatedly.
I think I have finally learned that if you can second guess then you likely guessed correctly to begin with.
God, I love this sport. When I climbed down 10 minutes later I could smell his scent! I take it the rut is begun or close.
Several weeks ago I had a larger buck walk casually ascorr the road and stand just inside the woods as I drove to work - just 1/4 mile from home. Also an eight-point rack but much taller and larger on all counts.
Can't say I haven't seen anything!
Happily I have not seen a single coyote. Last year I saw more coyotes than deer during bow season.
