Roving Hay Bales

I baled a small pasture this morning,got about 45 square bales. I was sitting in my recliner after supper and I was sooo tired thinking about a short nap maybe. I hated the thought of wasting some daylight so I strung my Longbow and headed out to take advantage of the bales laying in the pasture. I got a lot of great quartering shots and several pass throughs on broadside shots. As I was drawing down on a bale in the far corner of the pasture I saw a small head bobbing up and down behind the bale. A turkey hen was several feet on down from the bale so I let down thinking I might hit what I was looking at.I waited for her to clear and she slid on into the cover of the bordering woods. I continued around the field harvesting several bales along the way. Some were definitely Pope and Young but with the exorbitant cost of a mount I decided to leave um laying. As I circled around I decided to check to see if my beans needed picking before heading to the house. As I stood surveying the bean rows I looked up on the ridge and there were three does giving me the Big Eye. I think these are the doe and two fawns I've been seeing all summer. The fawns have lost their spots. All in all I'm glad I fought that urge to sit on my behind and let the rest of the day slip away,once it's gone you'll never get it back.

My neighbor makes the big round bales. I always make sure I get out right away before he gathers them up. I call it "mastadon hunting". I love taking long shots at them across the field.

Another seasonal target of opportunity is corn stalking. After the corn is cut it leaves a short stub about 10" high. Shooting the stalks and the dropped ears with a Judo is a yearly ritual I look forward to.

Aside from the smell of fresh cut hay roving through 30 acres of big round bales makes all that work seem just that much more worthwhile.

its my favourite way to spend a day ... these days I think I prefer it too hunting

I do the same thing, my wifes uncle bales the big spin bales and I hunt on the edge of one of the hay fields when i walk out of the woods if hunt the mornings I always bring some judo pointed arrows and shoot the bales on the way out! If I hunt PM I use them as warm up shots!

You really should consider donating those harvested bales.....   We go through 4 a week for horse and pony so bring em' on over
