(Another One of Those) Elk Arrow Opinion Questions....
« on: August 24, 2012, 01:08:00 PM »
I'm curious as to what the knowledgable folks here think.

All things being equal, 27" draw, sharp 2 blade STOS BH, perfect flying arrow, equally "proficient?" shooting...which would you feel most comfortable taking elk hunting.

A 'D' shaped longbow pulling 56# at 27" and shooting a 530 grain arrow

Or

A hybrid shaped longbow pulling 52# at 27" and shooting a 605 grain arrow.

Both bows are good designs from very reputable bowyers. I don't have a chrono or anything that would calculate KE - so I'm just asking for opinions.

Thanks!

Either set up will do it.  I like the heavier arrow.  Have you tried shooting the heavier arrow out of the heavier bow?  Pick the one you shoot best.

I agree either will be fine. For me I would pick the hybrid; you should pick the one that works better for you.

Yea I've tried tons of combinations - I have more arrows than I should (granted I used to be an investor in an archery shop so I have ton's of different alumn shafts). That would have been best case - but they both like different spines, and the interesting thing is the 52 likes a stiff shaft and the 56 more weak. It's actually fun messing with them.

Thanks for the input - I'm comfortable with both setups but if one would penetrate substantially more than the other, it's my obligation to use that.

It looks that the hybrid delivery more energy and with the heavier arrow you'll have more penetration.if you shoot it equally well as the other bow,I would take the hybrid!

without knowing the speed those bows are capable of, we are not actually certain which is "better".

The heavier arrow might immediately look like a better penetrator, but not if it is going 30 fps slower, or is a much thicker shaft, or doesn't fly quite as well, etc.

I am thinking that they are pretty close.  Go with your gut feeling and whatever is your favorite.

Thanks Chuck - I hear ya, I was really curious about the speed myself. They both look plenty quick enough to the eye and I'm confident in both. I was really just bored and wondering what folks thought about penetration with the limited information I can provide. Fortunately I like em' both - but I think takedown will prevail!

Either one will work, but for me personally I would choose the heavier arrow.
