Best mid weight wool
« on: August 25, 2012, 05:42:00 AM »
Any thoughts on woolpower, kuiu merino or first lite? In the market for something to go under a KOM or be worn alone in warmer weather.

I am a little biased, I think the Asbell wool is the best midwieght offering out there. Check my site or gfredasbell.com. We are both sponsors here.

Are you looking for a midweight   base  layer?
Does it have to be camo?
You might also look at Minus 33.  Good quality for less $ but I don't think they have camo.

Not a singlet, but something that can be worn on its own or for layering when it gets cold. Ideally has zip, stand up collar and be camo or natural colors. I was brought up on wool and will wear nothing else.

Ibex has good stuff and different weights, but they don't cater to hunters. I'll second smartwool also.

I hate to say it, but the Smartwool TML light was made for bowhunters.  I LOVE mine.

Me actually wearing it, shooting a bow.

you can see in the first pic how the sleeves are knit tight, and don't cause issues with strings hitting them.  Thumbloops are a big plus IMO for more reasons than shooting a bow

Oh, I'll be adding some Ibex Shack gear in the future.

The more technical wool from today's companies has a lot to offer to the hunter.  They may not have that "traditional" look, but I get over it quick when I'm warm and not having clothing meltdowns

I have a smartwool sweeter purchased in 2004, with collar and ziper made in Fiji, that I can not wear out. I had another smartwool with full length zipper made in china that lasted two seasons.

Same here.  I have a few First Lite items; very good quality and they offer multiple camo options.  They have some shirts that fit the description of what you're looking for.

I own some Minus 33 items for base layers, but as already pointed out, they don't offer camo, just plain colors (and even then, a lot of their items only come in black -- good for blind hunting I guess).

Merino Smartwool. Light weight base layer, medium over that, heavy Filson over that if needed Filson wool zip front vest over that Filson jacket liner with sleeves over that. Any combo of the above great flexiblity and movement. The last layer restricts movement a little but not as much as a single heavier garment. Layering deals with wind pass through pretty well. For warm early seasons you can go with just a single light weight or medium layer with cotton camo on top if you think you need it.

I second Smartwool.  Also check out Icebreaker.  Their stuff rocks.  I also just started wearing a  new brand called Stoic.  You get it from backcountry.com.  All are awesome, and come in erthtone colors, but probably not camp.

I've got to go with Teresa Asbell's wool products, too.  Can't beat it for the price.  Plus, well, it was hand made right here in America.
